Run as Administrator under Compatibility doesn't hold

Win 8.1 Pro x64. I just discovered a desktop icon that I regularly use (VPN), that I had set to run as administrator under the compatibility tab, wasn't running as administrator. In fact, the checkmark quit holding, except under "change settings for all users," but that wasn't having any effect. Finally, I just ran as administrator from the context menu and it worked. The question is why is this happening? The check under the compatibility tab was holding up to at least a few months ago, although I can't pinpoint exactly when it changed (an 8.1 update?).

Right now, it's running as Admin after starting normally, no context menu, even though neither box is checked under compatibility mode. The difference seems to be having "taken ownership" of the file (and folder). Under the Details tab, Owners does show as "Administrators." Why should that be necessary to run as admin? Thanks,

Most likely not taking hold under the registry for that setting. You should never have to run as administrator, unless you start running into issues with the program.

I've always had to run this VPN program as administrator, on the suggestion of the program's staff. And autoruns and some other programs often prompt me to run as administrator, or to take administrator rights, to complete some operation, so I'm not seeing where you get the 'never.'

But that's not the issue: it's all programs; i.e., I just tried setting the run as admin on several desktop icon compatibility tabs and not one held. That's not expected behavior.

Hello highstream have you tried running the program as administrator by first selecting "Change settings for all users" then following the steps in order as pictured below after which your program should automatically "Run as Administrator".

The OS will release the temporary administrative rights to a program. Because it is the design of Windows 8.x.x. Microsoft got smart about trying to protect the OS from the end user habits. You never want to give a program administrative rights, because it can allow infection of the OS.

As for being told by the program staff to run as admin. They need to stop telling people that. If the software designer who wrote the VPN software wanted it to run under administrative rights. They would have written it to do so.

IownAmoneyPit - The answer is yes and it didn't lead to running as admin, which is what I tried to convey that in the OP.

broe23 - Well while you make a fair point which I'll pass along, the problem that led to the post was/is I couldn't get it or any other program to give admin rights through Properties. I don't think that's what MS had in mind, otherwise they would have changed the choices in that dialog box. In any case, the VPN software was written for Win 7 and XP, and when I started with them nearly two years ago I was probably the first with Win 8. Beyond that, am I correct in assuming that Take Ownership invokes admin rights indefinitely?

Take Ownership, just means that user has the rights to make changes to that file or folder. When Microsoft designed Windows 8. They designed it with layered security, and made it so that as I stated before. The OS would be safe from a user's bad habits.
