Stuck in Metro apps screen - Win-key doesn't toggle

Sometimes when I toggle from the classic desktop to the metro desktop using the Win key there is no way for me to get back to the classic desktop - basically it gets stuck (nothing wrong with my keyboard - I've duplicated this using two keyboards). Whenever this happens, I can see the little Windows start-button icon depressed (it is perpetually pressed down). When this happens the only way I can see the classic desktop is by pressing ALT+Tab (which will show the classic desktop for as long as I hold the ALT+Tab keys down for, then when I let go will revert back to metro).

Basically when this happens, I have to reboot my computer so I can us the classic desktop.

Anyone experience anything similar, and if so, how I might remedy this?

Hello Maoci,

When this happens next, see if pressing the Windows + D keys will take you to the desktop. :)

Thanks. Neither Win+D, ESC, nor the Win key by itself works. It's as if something in Windows 8 is causing it to perpetually press the Windows/start key in the bottom left corner (it even shades purple as if it is being clicked down on)

Since it has just started doing this, you could see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated before this started may be able to undo and fix it.

This problem started a long time ago. It's just been bugging me recently. Unfortunately I didn't have system restore turned on (doh!). So I'm stuck trying to either figure it out or to wipe and re-install windows. Hope I wouldn't have to resort to that, and there might be some add'l advice on what I can do.

I tried to do a clean startup, and I'm still experiencing the same problem. I'm also experiencing another problem where my Explorer will restart itself so if I have folders open it basically resets the toolbar (all my apps that were open are still open, but the file Explorers are gone).

Can I do a dump to detect this problem. I don't know much about dumps, but I've downloaded the windbg tool, and am able to get to the Command window. I don't know how to use this and would appreciate any help figuring out what I should type and what I should paste in this discussion thread.

Thanks!

Are you running any custom theming utility or third party program to give you the classic Start Menu like Classic Shell etc?
