I just brought home a Lenovo G710 with Windows 8.1
I tried to set the boot order so that the CD-ROM drive would be first. I found that the file system is UEFI. I had a choice of legacy or UEFI. But I did not see where to set the CD-ROM.
An explanation of the predicament I find myself in will be appreciated.

It should be under Boot or such. It does not matter if it is a UEFI or older bios. The setup is still going to be the same, when you go into the bios.

Personally I would not set it for CD-ROM or USB. You can leave it to allow you to press F12, to change boot drive. But personally I would leave the Hard Drive as first boot device.

The general idea---

Enable "boot menu" to get F-12 key assigned.
It will be under Boot tab.

On some systems this isn't possible anymore, having given way to a one-time boot menu option. So if you wanted to boot from a DVD, for example, you'd select the option for the one time boot menu, pick the optical drive, and away you go.

Also, FYI, UEFI isn't a filesystem, it's a replacement for the aging and decrepit BIOS.

I see "Firmware Settings" instead of a "Bios" on my computer.
Of course "Firmware" takes me to the "BIOS". :)

Maybe Microsoft will do something about this in the future.

Considering Intel developed UEFI, and it exists completely independently of Windows, I find that rather unlikely... But stranger things have probably happened. :p

Intel did not develop UEFI. They were one of many organizations involved in the development of it. HP originally developed the EFI bios platform. It was mainly Apple's request for the push of the UEFI bios platform, when they switched over to the Intel CPU & GPU chipset platforms for Mac OS-X. Microsoft only decided to push for Beige box mfg's to switch to the platform, to keep up against the stronger power being Apple. Unified EFI Forum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Believe it or not, you can actually download the Source Code for the EFI bios, and create your own EFI bios platform.

I have a Lenovo laptop with UEFI firmware.

You do not need to change the boot order.

Lenovo novo button. When the computer is off, press this button to start the Lenovo Recovery system or the BIOS setup utility, or to enter the boot menu.

Note: If the DVD does not appear in the boot menu, the DVD is not Secure Boot compatible (for example, Windows 7 64-bit DVD).

To all:

Finally got enough clues to point me in the correct direction, especially the last one.
The following steps work for the Lenovo G710, maybe for others with UEFI.

1. Insert the disk in the CD-ROM drive you expect to BOOT from. The disk must be a "boot-able" disk.
2. Shut down the computer.
3. When ready, press the "novo" button. Located just to the right on the power button. The bios option dialog will open.
4. Select the boot menu. Notice that the CD-ROM drive is listed. If not in first place, move it to first place using the computer arrow keys. Hit ENTER on your keyboard.
5. The words "To boot from CD hit any key"will display on the mnitor. You MUST hit any key while these words are displayed otherwise the computer will boot regularly. IF you do this correctly another dialog box will open for you to confirm that you wish to boot from the CD-ROM drive. Hit OK.
6. Good Luck!

Bill
