working on a Dell 15r that has the thumbnailextractionhost.exe bug so it is effectively impossible to do any repair functions that requitre a functioning windows 8. slaving the disk, I see the default user profile was migrated/recreated around the same time the users issues began, recently, and it has no other archived default-user profile that I can identify. I don't have media, of course, its windows 8.

can someone point me to an online source for a microsoft-issue default user profile.?

if anyone knows how to STOP the loading of thumbnailextractionhost.exe - a method that does not imply/depend-on a WORKING windows 8... amazing the things microsoft thinks up. their 'fixes' require the system to be working

thanks for responding.
already done. it comes up clean with the common scans.
quite maddening: I search on the issue and there are lots of people with 8/8.1 that have this issue, but no sure cures. try this, try that. I have seen it go stable for brief moment, then starts all over again. it generates infinite retries of thumbnailextractionhost.exe until the system croaks [that's a lot on an i7 with 1TB drive!] nuts. I'm going to try one suggestion to turn off windows error reporting, but any of these 'fixes' are not really fixes, they are workarounds.
All of microsoft/technet posts I've seen begin with the premise THAT THE USER HAS A USABLE WINDOWS DESKTOP.
sorry for shouting, but its truly irrational.

speed was important, if possible, and you are right about the 'best way'. in a week or three I will refresh.
For now, the system is stable.

For those having this same issue [many in the wild], I do not know what the true root of this issue is, but the crippling symptoms stopped when Norton 360 was purged completely from the system. [Dell should be flogged publicly for putting that devil on Windows 8 systems]. System is performing well but there remains an issue with Thumnail creation and/or extraction. I could not immediately get the folder views to display thumbnails of images.

There is traffic in forums about the wicked behavior of recent iterations of NOrton 360 - it will corrupt and modify not only the extant user-created User accounts but the defaults. Very foul, very suspicious behavior and I did not see where anyone qualified at Symantec owned it.

i will agree to your shout. sorry but i would bail out and reload windows .quicker and cheaper.if somone is paying to have it fixed
