In my windows 8.1 laptop, when I empty the recycle bin, the desktop icon does not refresh to the empty trashcan icon.

How do I fix this bug in 8.1?

Are you doing this from the Desktop or Metro/Start Screen?

Does it display correctly after a restart? It may not be a Windows 'bug', have not seen it on several Win8/8.1 computers.

I'm working entirely on the desktop. I never use the metro side.

I also know how to modify the registry but don't know what to change in Windows 8.1 to fix this bug which has been known for years but that Microsoft has not yet bothered to fix.

My Computer

Yeah, that bug exists long time now, haven't seen it in Win 8 yet though. In the past, Refresh desktop worked.

Refresh desktop still works, but should not have to do it.
Agreed, annoying little bug and that may happen to other icons too. I think it has something to do with icon cache, emptying it and rebuilding it can get rid of it for a while, it just "forgets" to change icon.
BTW. I stopped using Recycle bin long time ago or just hold Shift key while deleting files on other people's computers as some use it as temporary storage for files. Have to keep it on desktop though because some programs, when uninstalled insist on putting files they delete in it even when it's disabled.

Well, from time to time the Recycle Bin got corrupted. If you wish, Just delete the recycle bin and reboot. Windows will re-create a brand new recycle bin. You don't need to refresh Windows.

Change the folder option to show hidden files & Folders. Take ownership then delete it.

EDIT: After doing the above, try to delete something and empty it to see if it's back to normal. I think it should.

Good luck.

I agree. I don't remember the last time I needed to restore anything from the recycle bin. Forgot about the shift option. Will use it more often.
