Solved Getting Windows 8.1 out of CSM in BIOS

Alright, so here's the deal.

I was dual booting Windows 8 and Ubuntu for a long time and everything was working perfectly. A change happened when I accidentally messed up the registry in Ubuntu while using Java Script, rendering it useless. I decided since I'm not in a position where I have the time to work on fixing the OS, I decided to get rid of the OS altogether until I can buy a new desktop/laptop and have Ubuntu running on it on its own.

The process was successfully completed, up until I edited the BIOS sections.

I used a USB System Recovery Drive to make the final change in the booting of the system, which meant that I had to change the Boot Type from uefi to csm to boot from the USB. Here's where the problem is, however: I didn't revert back to uefi after I shut down. All I get now is a black screen when I turn on the power and that's it--no logos, no text. Is there anything I can do to fix this, or is my hard drive absolutely toast?

I backed everything up before this happened, so there's no loss of information past program setting that I can reset, but I would prefer not to have to change anything. Any suggestions?

Thanks you.

I've done several installs on my UEFI BIOS laptops and haven't had to change anything to boot from my Windows install thumb drives. You may have to do that for other operating systems but it shouldn't be necessary when installing Windows 8. If you install in one mode and then change it latter it will fail to boot. The CSM setting shouldn't matter but switching UEFI will mess things up.

First off, there is no registry for Linux. I also doubt that Java messed up the Ubuntu install, something else did. As for installing Windows 8. Secure boot needs to be turned off. Then you should be able to install Windows 8 off of the USB, as long as it is not an Upgrade edition.

I haven't had to turn secure boot off to install Windows 8 or 8.1 from a thumb drive?

The thing is that I didn't mess up the install. While registering a new java version, I edited my etc/profile on Ubuntu and I ended up messing up a batch file, which in retrospect wouldn't have been too hard to fix, but out of frustration and lack of time in that moment, I just erased Ubuntu from the hard drive for the time being.

The problem I'm having is getting my system boot type from BIOS out of CSM. All I was doing was repairing the Windows Booting Process. Secure boot was already off so that GRUB could help dual boot Ubuntu and Windows Boot Manager. I used CSM to boot a Windows Repair Drive and now, since the computer is off, it doesn't boot Windows. I have absolutely no access to BIOS since all I get is a black screen with no controls.

I have yet to find a way to switch CSM to UEFI because of this...

Unplug the power pack, remove the battery, press and hold the power button for 5 seconds or so. Plug the power plug back in. Now boot up, and quickly press the keyboard key required to access the BIOS.

It was likely in a hybrid sleep mode due to Windows Fast Startup being enabled. If you can't get into Windows to turn it off, removing all power will put the PC back to a full power down state. I'm glad that trick worked for you.
