Problem burning cd's

My friend needs to burn photos to a cd on a regular basis. It has been working for a few months, now it is failing.

His usual process is that he selects about 25 photos, goes to Share>Burn to disc. It then opens File Explorer, shows the DVD drive with the photos in there, and then burns the disk and ejects it. (When asked, I choose to burn it "like a flash drive".)

But now it has started to fail in this process. Sometimes it just stops right after it puts the photos in File Explorer in the dvd drive window, and leaves them there, without burning. Sometimes it continues to the next step and seems to burn them, but they are not on the disk. And sometimes it completes and works correctly

I've tried it twice today. It seems to go through the burning process.

But when I eject the disk and put it back in, it is blank, although the disk name is today's date, so it apparently at least started the burn process.

And then it shows a pop up bubble, saying there are files waiting to be burned to disc. and it shows the photos waiting there, under Files Ready to be Burned to disc.

I've also tried the disk in another computer and it confirms the files are not on it, but it too shows the disk name as today's date.

Then I did it a second time, same procedure, and it worked fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I just tried it again and it failed. I noticed that on the attempts that fail, it does not present the usual dialog at the beginning that asks if you want to burn the disk "like a Flash drive".

You might try using a DVD/CD burning program (some free programs out there, try FileHippo and others for downloading) just to verify that the DVD Drive is working properly. He might even like the program instead of using Windows burning.

CDBurnerXP is pretty good: https://cdburnerxp.se/en/home

If it works then you at least know it is something with the native Windows burner and not the drive.

What type CDs, CD-R or CD-RW. As a diagnostic to try, the CD-R is about as generic as it gets.
R = Recordable, once
RW = ReWriteable, can be erased and used again or add more data to before closed or finalized.

I don't use it much ,I only use cdr-r ,but as the OP says it asks how you want to use the disk ,like a usb or to use in another cd player ,and if you choose flash it formats the cd-r to act some what like a cd-rw, haven't used it much but I did work for me before.

but I think for best results the user should use cd-rw's

just to add I am testing what you are doing, using a cd-r disk ,i drag and drop the pic's from the picture folder to the dvd burners icon in file explorer . It said to use like a flash drive /usb drive what ever the wording I forget .it then formats the cd-r to act like a cd-rw but I have since put pictures on it 4 time ,ejection each time ,it only asked the once how I wanted to use the disk ,

I was keying in on the fact that he said it was working, now it's not. Assumed they knew how to do it, maybe not. I've had the native Windows burner act up before. I tend to avoid using it if possible.

The discs are cd-r.

And I have him using a blank disc every time, just to make it easier to try to figure out.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but when I showed him how to do it, I had him highlight the pictures he wants to burn and then go to Share>Burn to disk, rather than actually dragging them to the empty window for the dvd drive. Maybe next time I log in I will try it the old way.

A few things come to mind from my experience. First, the CD lens does get dust on it. Make sure it's clean. I know this is obvious, but sometimes overlooked. CD drives do fail and are not very expensive. Have you tried another one? Another thing, sometimes I have gotten a bad batch of CD's, several in the package are bad, or sometimes the whole package. Try a CD from another batch or brand.

when I right click ,share with doesn't have a dvd-rw option ,but I have it in the send to ,so I click that .

I think what iam doing is a little different ,because iam not choosing enough file to fill the disk ,you are using a new disk every time ,and not getting the how do you want to use it ,with the 2 options each time , not sure why it would do that .

That doesn't usually matter, I've put as little as 172KB on a CD-R disc for archiving data retrieved from 4 floppy disks for a lady. Granted, it does look like a waste but at $24.95 to $29.95 for a 'cakebox' of 100 discs it actually works out to less than what one of the floppies used to cost in a box of 10.

He's been using the Share button that's on the toolbar on the top of the window.
ok,iam on win10 right now with no files to burn ,will try in a bit when I go back on win8

edit---
ok,i see the toolbar share and yes it works for me there to ,but once you say that you want to use it as a usb drive ,you will only be asked this once for each cd-r.
and as countmike says ,you can keep adding file till the disk is full, then you choose close session to finalise the cd-r

Unless you "Close Session" on a disk, CD or DVD you can always ad more up to it's capacity. Only exceptions are when burning an ISO file and with "musical, CDA " disks when session is closed automatically.
