This may have been answered and could be a very stupid question - I am completely lost trying to distinguish between:

  1. Windows 8.1 Core
  2. Windows 8.1 Core Single Language
As I don't see the word Core anywhere - Please have a look at the screenshot, could anyone kindly explain the difference as the generic install key is different for both

Thanks in advance

hi , it doesn't show core because there are only 2 version sold to non business consumers, win8 and win8 pro , so if it doesn't say pro ,then it core .as for single language, it means just that ,to have more language options you would have to install the language pack ,like in the link below.hope this helps a bit ,

Thanks caperjack in other words what you are saying they are one and the same thing? Then why there are two different generic install keys?

Right. The two would be identical except for the number of languages you could switch between without an additional download. The single language would be useful for very low end devices where there's very little storage and you want to cut the size of the OS footprint as much as possible.

I do understand this, however, what bothers most is
I don't see the word Core anywhere
when winver command is used

Yes, it is confusing. If it says nothing, it is Core.

If it was Core Single Language, or Pro, then it would tell you.

Sorry about all the fuss, so it's safe to infer that I've Windows 8x CORE Single Language

There are couple of more questions and I request learned members to please help I also admit that I am being paranoid here - only because don't want to get stuck in endless loop of activation

To make long story short, this laptop came pre-installed Windows 8 Single Language that I upgraded to 8.x through Store. Now I want to go for a clean install, I've installation media from following two .iso

  2. Which one should I opt 8 or updated 8x?

I have Windows 8.1. I bought my Windows 8.1 in Mexico so the system is in Spanish. I changed my system language to English without any problem. When I click on "Add a Language" I get dozens of languages starting with Afrikaans and ending at Yoruba.

I am running Windows 8.1 and can order a key for Windows 8.1 Pro Pack if I want for another $1,820 pesos.

From what I have read Core and Core Single Language are two different SKU's, they are two different ISO images and the keys are not interchangeable. A Core key will not work for the Single Language edition, and a Single Language key will not work for the normal Core edition. As already mentioned, if it doesn't say 8.x Pro its Core. How you tell if it's single language I don't know. My two laptops came with 8 Core preinstalled. They were not single language. Likely because you have the option of English or French language during the OBBE first time setup.

Thank you

The first one is Windows 8 Multi editions, Core and Pro. It's a TechNet/MSDN ISO. As far as I know It's not Single Language. I do not believe it will use your embedded OEM BIOS key. You'll know when you try to install it. If it prompts for a key that means it will not use your embedded key. I used that ISO to install Windows on my laptop and it used my embedded key automatically. 8 Core was installed automatically without any prompt to enter a key. My laptop didn't come with the single language edition though. The second one, I have no idea, it's not a TechNet ISO. To verify if your ISO matches one of those you compare your MD5 against what's listed. if they match it should be safe to use. For the first one listed anyway. I have no idea if what's listed for the second one is legit or not.

Thanks alphanumeric:

I wanted to verify the legitimacy of the downloaded files ̶ the details (CRC32, MD5, SHA-1) are from the actual downloads using HashTab

The integrity of first one (en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.iso) you already verified, the second one (IR3_CSLA_X64FRER_en-US_DV9.iso) is mentioned in this forum downloaded from MDL as .esd file ̶ it contains all updates till April 2014, all I want is if someone has installed from this could please verify the parameters

Thank you

Be careful with anything you download from MDL? They openly discus bypassing/cheating activation etc. Stuff that would get you banned on any other reputable forum. You can go to MSDN and look at the subscriber downloads. If you click the details for an ISO it will list the SHA 1 code. You can look around for free, you just can't download anything without a subscription. It will list the actual file name for the ISO too. That's as official as it gets. Google the actual file name and you should be able to find a torrent download for it. There are some that upload their MSDN or TechNet ISO's to bit torrent for those that don't have any other way to get them. It's not something I would ever do, my MVP status means to much to me to chance losing it by doing something like that, that could get me in trouble.

Thanks for the verification, I really need Windows 8.1 Core Single Language .iso my earlier download of .esd and subsequent conversion to .iso was unverifiable - Microsoft has made this next to impossible for the ones with OEM install as so far nothing has worked for legit download

I have a download which I believe having verifiable parameters from grey area, there are two problems:

  1. I would like someone to verify legitimacy with a stupid question - what are the chances that even all parameters match file could have been tempered?
  2. Rufus is defaulting the Volume Label as the one created from .esd file (link obtained from MDL) which I am reluctant to use

The Single Language ISO's are not listed on MSDN so I don't know what the actual file names are? Or the hash codes? Single Language versions really throw a wrench into things. The TechNet/MSDN ISO's will use OEM keys, just not those SL keys. In the past before I was an MVP, I had to resort to downloading an ISO off of bit torrent. The hash was what it was supposed to be so I used it. Since then though its been official ISO's from TechNet and MSDN. Wish I could be more help.

It's almost impossible to recreate a hash other than from the original source - that's why MSDN lists those for verification.

The Single Language ISO's are only distributed to OEM's - The ESD files are downloaded via a loophope which allows Windows 8 users to upgrade via the store. There are no hash verifications as each download uses authentication prior and creates the esd based on certain parameters at the time of download....or similar - hash will thus always be different based on that.
