Getting rid of the app portion of 8.1

I have setup Windows 8.1 so it boots directly into the old Windows 7 desktop interface and that works fine for me.

Since I never have any use for the app desktop, is it possible to avoid that desktop from even loading so as to make the boot faster?

How?

If it is your intention to boot directly to the Start Screen instead of the Desktop try this.

Search Taskbar and Navigation
Under the Navigation tab remove the tick beside When I sign or close....

I believe this will do it. The desktop will still be available when needed.

If you question was to just use the desktop and remove the start screen from the system then the answer is can't be done.

I don't think it loads unless you sign in using your MS Account. As long as your signing into your local account ?

You can turn off one drive and Store with gpedit.(gpedit.msc) Look in Computer configuration, then Administration Templates. The settings you are looking for are mostly there including. Turning off the start screen.

That's how I currently have it.

The next reply in this thread suggests that it doesn't load anyway unless I login into a MS account. So, if that's true, then it doesn't matter anyway because I don't even have a MS account.

Thank you both.
