Win 8 Photo app not working correctly

When my friend plugs in his iPhone wanting to download photos from it to the computer, a full screen Metro app opens, which I believe is the Photo app. But it just says Apple iPhone in big letters, and below that "There are no files or folders in this view". There are definitely pictures on the phone, and I had him take a few new ones just to be sure. In Autoplay, iPhone default action is "Import photos and videos (Photo)" so I am assuming this is the Photo app. I ran sfc /scannow, which found no problems, and DISM which said it fixed some corruption, and rebooted. But the issue remains. Any ideas? Thanks

Thanks for the link, but I think that page, even though it says Windows 7/8, is really only for 7, since it does not show the Photos app as a choice, only choice is import with Windows, which Win 8 does not have. When I've looked at other tutorials, like this one, How To Import Photos From iPhone To Windows 8 they show the Photos app being used, like it is used for a regular camera. But it seems that the Photo app on this computer does not see the pictures on this iPhone, per the message it gives. Thanks

In the tutorial I linked to in my previous post, it says

"In this guide, we’re going to show you how to safely transfer photos from your iPhone to your Windows 8 PC without the need of iTunes"

But I am wondering if maybe iTunes really is needed for the Photo app to see the pictures??

I'd rather not install iTunes unless it is necessary.

Yes, when I get to the 4th step:

"Step 4:
Select photos and videos that you wish to import and then click or tap Import button...."

the screen just says "Apple iPhone" in big letters, the layout and font similar to what you see in the tutorial screenshot, but there are no photos shown, and says "There are no files or folders in this view".

I don't have an iPhone to test ,my daughter has one but don't live here now ,I have and use iTunes on my computer to use with a ipad I use for musing
and I don't blame you for not wanting to install iTunes ,it will see it as a new device and then the fun starts ,but if you did install iTunes and go into its properties you can set it to not auto sync and stuff so to make it less likely you would have issues ,good luck

It looks like you do need iTunes installed for the Photos app to be able to import from the iPhone. At least it worked that way on my computer, could not do the import until I went and installed iTunes. I will try it on my friend's computer next week.
