Hello!

[FONT=&quot]I've been reading for a while, but decided to become a member only day before yesterday to post being unable to find solution. I do apologize in advance if this is a dumb question or answered earlier

[/FONT]

[FONT=&quot]I would like to nuke system for clean install. I understand there will be system reserved partitions, however, my main concern relates to OS and DATA partitions - Please review attached screenshots and advise

  1. 150 GB for C (OS) drive?
  2. 30 GB for RECOVERY?
  3. Remaining for DATA?

[FONT=&quot]
I am unsure where did I read RECOVERY should be the last partition - how would this be accomplished?

Thanks in advance for prompt response

I would have to ask you to be more precise about exactly what you want to do.

For instance, if you are going to wipe the drive and start over by installing Windows 8.1 by yourself, you really do not need a Recovery Image partition (last one) because you will not have a factory image to place in it.

You have to be careful when pre-partitioning. It can be done, but if not done correctly, you will get error messages about not being able to create certain partitions.

A Recovery Image partition is normally just a little larger than the image placed in it. It is created by creating a partition, like the OS partition, and then shrinking it to allow unallocated space for that partition.

The other partitions, Recovery Tools, System, MSR, and OS are created automatically by the install, and these are the critical ones you have to be able to create if you do it manually.

The actual sizes of your OS or Data partitions will depend on how you use your system. A 150 GB OS partition would work fine for me, but you may want to install programs which take more space.

Thanks Saltgrass: I will try my level best to answer as precisely as possible

I would have to ask you to be more precise about exactly what you want to do.
Partition 750GB, 7200rpm disk for Windows 8.1 clean install

For instance, if you are going to wipe the drive and start over by installing Windows 8.1 by yourself,
Thar's correct

you really do not need a Recovery Image partition (last one) because you will not have a factory image to place in it.
I understand, however, is it possible to manually create one using which system could be reset?

You have to be careful when pre-partitioning. It can be done, but if not done correctly, you will get error messages about not being able to create certain partitions.
What's your suggestion to avoid pitfall?

A Recovery Image partition is normally just a little larger than the image placed in it. It is created by creating a partition, like the OS partition, and then shrinking it to allow unallocated space for that partition.
Could you please help detailing how to do?

The actual sizes of your OS or Data partitions will depend on how you use your system. A 150 GB OS partition would work fine for me, but you may want to install programs which take more space.
I also believe 150 GB would be more than sufficient as my older laptop with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit has only consumed 70 GB out of 115 GB that's in use since 2011

If you look at one of the screenshots it's not allowing me to reduce OS partition beyond 333 GB - and yes I messed system earlier trying to to do this ending restoring from recovery

Cheers

Thank you genet: Little bit more information - This system came pre installed with Windows 8 64-bit I've .iso for both 8 and 8.1 what would you recommend for clean install

UEFI Boot Mode (installing using the GPT partition style): is the one I will give a shot, however, OS partition size remains questionable?

Hi theog: Would it be a clean install?

Thanks

Edit: Both downloads are legit. Windows 8 is from a link (HP Forum) I am unsure if I could post the link (don't want to violate) while 8.1 is from this very forum (.esd file)

Have you tried this? -> Refresh or Reset your PC from the manufacturer recovery partition.

Here is more info -> link (see also the pictures, how to use Windows Disk Management to shrink the C: partition)

I already did this when messed up while partitioning

I would give it a shot, however, if you look at last screenshot in original post the OS partition couldn't be reduced below 333 GB where as you and I are in agreement 150 GB will work

Thanks

caperjack I am aware during clean install there's an option to delete all partitions - Windows will create all required partitions including one for OS. Questions are:

  1. Whether at this stage OS partition could be further partitioned?
  2. Could this partition be 150 GB and sufficient?
Thanks

I would like to step in, briefly. When I first encountered the UEFI system, an factory installed computers (Dell, as it happens, but similar to your partition setup), I was unaware of some of the consequences of attempting to change the oartitions. As a result, I ruined to afctory restore, before catching on.
May I advise you, before you attempt any of the excellent advice here, to make a complete image (Macrium?) before doing anything.

By the way, there is an excellent tutorial in that section:

Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.

At this point I have nothing important on this system - I do have HP Recovery USB

I have this bookmarked and went over and again but it didn't address OS partition size

Question remains - Optimum size of OS partition as I don't want to keep on experimenting

Thanks and regards

I understand, however, is it possible to manually create one using which system could be reset?

Look into recimg.exe:

Code:
C:\>recimg /?
Configures the recovery image Windows uses to refresh your PC.

RECIMG.EXE <command> <arguments>

The recimg.exe command line tool lets you configure a custom recovery image
for Windows to use when you refresh your PC. When you create a custom
recovery image, it will contain the desktop apps you've installed, and the
Windows system files in their current state. Recovery images do not contain
your documents, personal settings, user profiles, or apps from Windows Store,
because that information is preserved at the time you refresh your PC.
