Uninstall Not listing all my programs

Hi,

My name is Ceira from Scotland, and I have just joined this forum, moving from windows 7.

I was forced to buy a new computer, all now come with windows 8.

I do not like it at all, it is so dumbed down and so difficult to use; I wish I could return to windows 7.

I have however over the last few months installed many of my old programs from windows 7. This was straight forward. It was also easy to uninstall them using the control panel.

Then suddenly, in the control panel window for uninstalling, many of these programs are not listed. Yes they are still working well, like Microsoft word and excel, but they do not show in the uninstall window.

Has this happened to anyone else? Could my anti virus AVAST have anything to do with it. Can anybody help me. I have spent ages on this.

Many thanks,
Ceira

Hi Ceira, welcome to the Eight Forums.

Then suddenly, in the control panel window for uninstalling, many of these programs are not listed. Yes they are still working well, like Microsoft word and excel, but they do not show in the uninstall window.

Individual applications of the Microsoft Office suite do not appear on the list of installed programs in Programs and Features. Instead they can all be found under Microsoft Office entry. If you want to remove individual components of the Microsoft Office suite, select it and click Change:

2014-09-17_22h53_27.png

Select Add or Remove Features, click Continue:

2014-09-17_22h54_35.png

Select the component / application you want to remove (uninstall), select Not Available, click Continue:

2014-09-17_22h55_46.png

Microsoft Office installer runs now and removes the components / applications you have selected:

When done, the components / applications you removed are no longer installed on your computer.

Thanks for the replies but I must not be explain this well.

Yesterday the control panel showed over 50 installed programs. (I only mentioned microsoft as an example, as I did not want to list all the 50+)

When I go to the control panel now, I only see 10 programs listed. most of which are microsoft visual C++ updates. It does show dropbox and the Palemoon browser.

It does not show any of the microsoft office programs, or ccleaner or jetclean or format factory etc etc etc 50+ yet they are all installed and working well.

Why are they not showing up. Why are they not listed. I hope this helps explain the problem. I can show a screen shot if it helps.

Thanks, Ceira.

If you like the Windows 7 style desktop, you will get it with the 8.1 update. If you want the fully functional style Windows 7 desktop. You have to use third party utilities like Start8 or Classic Shell.

To get full access without having to use the Microsoft Live account. You have to use a Local user account. The Local account is how you used to use to log into prior versions of Windows.

Keep in mind that you cannot uninstall Metro Apps from within the Programs & Features from the desktop. Certain ones are going to stay, that are a part of Windows 8. Those cannot be uninstalled.

Yes I opened CCleaner and all the programs are there under uninstall.

You see I have learned to watch what is being installed all the time, I watch it ever other day just in case something annoying slips through as it does.

In the elevated command prompt type sfc /scannow then return

Then Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Then the sfc /scannow again

These processes will take a while. When finished reboot the computer and check the Control Panel

Thanks we are getting somewhere.

I am not familiar with the elevated command prompt but I search the internet to find cammd prompt on the shell start button.

At the command I typed sfc / scannow reply: You must be an administrator running a console session in order use the sfc utility.

So I am now lost. Does elevated mean administrator? But my account is and administrator why is it saying I must be and administrator, because that is the only accounts I have. (I got stung with standard accounts last year BTW)

Anyway, not giving me administrator rights is maybe the problem? Sorry I will have to continue tomorrow. It is not 01.15 and I have a heavy day tomorrow. Thanks for now. Ceira

Isn't that how it's done in Windows 7? In 8 and 8.1, press WIN + X to open Start context menu and select Command Prompt (Admin).
