I just figured out what's been bugging me about Windows 8

I've been saying for weeks now that "Win 8 is ok, but I'm just not excited about it in the same way that I was aboutn 7, and I can't figure out why."

I had put it down to the fact that I REALLY like 7, and so I was just grumbling at having to learn a new way of doing things, but today it hit me why.

Windows 8 makes me less productive. It's not even (directly) Metro's fault. As an example, I should not have to google how to shut an OS down. It should be obvious. To quote John, "I hope it reacts well to having the power cable pulled, because that's what's going to happen".

Then, when you do finally figure out how to shut it down, it takes a good 30 seconds longer to actually find and click shutdown rather than just hitting the good old Win>Right>Enter or even just clicking Start>Shutdown under 7.

Another example, Network and Sharing Centre. If you click the little network icon on the desktop, it brings up a completely NON functional window, informing you what network you are on. So then I Start Menu search network and sharing centre. Now, rather than just bringing it up as 7 would, I have to click across to Settings and then select it. Why? 7 always knew what I meant, without filtering.

This I personally think is symptomatic of a bigger problem within 8. Yes, the OS is faster and more responsive. However, everything takes longer to do!

Don't get me wrong, I like 8, I'm just very... on the fence about it at the moment. I'm waiting to see where it goes. Yes I know this is just the beta, but I think it's fair to say by this point, its probably a fairly accurate representation of what we are going to get.

hi Severedsolo,

well for me it is the opposite. I will never ever go back to Win7.
I like the metro, I like the startscreen (old fashion), one can set the taskbar to his hand (thanks to Shawn).
A lot of guys are helpful here.

Win 8 is faster then Win 7, no question about it.

Thanks to the forum here, I have on the taskbar, logoff, restart, shutdown, but also on the metro.

Could not ask for more.

Sure the network is difficult, but I guess one can do the same here. Create a shortcut and pin it to the metro.

So for me it is Win8 all the way, although I do not use cloud right now.

One can not stick to the old fashion way of using an O.S., there are guys still using Windows 98, my god.....

Jeff

Windows 8 should appeal to the 90% of the population that know nothing about computers, they want to be mobile, use apps, and mess around with their media, Metro on a smartphone or tablet should be fine for that.

As far as the other 10% who are power users, yeah Win 8 seems a slight let down at the moment, also I see no way in heck business could use it.

Good point Jeffry

Indeed Win8 is faster and runs the programs from Win98 better than Win7. So there is no need for Win98. (the Win98 episodes continue)

On the other hand Win7 could look like Win98 through the classic theme but Win8 doesn't have that anymore.

Anyway the classic theme looked a bit too old and dry.

    That's basically it.
Yes, there are some improvements to the underlying o/s - you kind of expect that after 3years.

They have made a real hash of using it , unfortunately.

Their eagerness to ensnare people into the MS clouds is the cause.

On a separate note - it also damn ugly - the improvements to the beautiful Aero are welcome - but the children's drawings are vile.

As pre-release OSs go, W8 is excellent, I do agree about the shutdown/sleep button, I'm sure that will change on the final release.

My W8 is far neater than my W7 and it's much easier to find stuff.

I think Nvidia needs to bring out a new graphics driver, because I'm having a few issues, but on the whole W8 has been very stable. I've needed some help from some great members from this site, but on the whole W8 is easy to use.

I score it 8 of 10, and that's a very high score for a pre-release (NO I DON'T WORK FOR MS :)

Well, the main thing with Windows 8 is that it is a reimagining of Windows. That being said, there are things that are TOTALLY different about it. Windows 8 isn't a simple updating of Windows, as was with xp to vista, vista to 7. It's a complete 720 plus 1 degree change. It's radical, it's new.

But hey, what's taking an hour out of your day to learn a new, radical, Windows operating system? :)

Hi,

Well, the main thing with Windows 8 is that it is a reimagining of Windows.

If that's the case then someone's sorely lacking in imagination as it's neither here nor there.

Everything you stated is basically what makes it not bad but annoying. The network thing has been bugging me since I first used it. It just makes it awkward the network "window" is metro but the other stuff is not. The thing is it feels half-baked with elements that clash. I just hope they do more work and find a real better replacement if they are going to remove the start button. The fact is right clicking at the left corner is just awkward and feels like it takes much longer just to do the same as before. Plus it's visually unappealing. Also when you hover over the left corner the screenshot of the start screen pops up which to the beginner and average user will not indicate right click this corner area. Besides having a "hidden" button all the way at an odd corner is just awkward and not user-friendly at all.

Yes, it's the same version as what installed automatically :( It's only minor bugs like all the images in Outlook 2010 emails have stripes. I'm sure Nvidia will update the drivers again soon.

I put 8 on a 2005 laptop that my brother uses. It is decent and plays 1080p videos no problems. He only uses it for Firefox and knows nothing, really nothing at all, else.

I went to show him the new Start menu. He didn't even realize the old Start is gone because he never used it all.

The first thing he said to me about the new Start was "I'm not gonna use it" lol

Try doing a start menu search for anything thats not an app. An extra click. Try reaching Network and Sharing Centre. Try reaching the goddamn control panel!

Yes I know you can make shortcuts. Yes I know there are workarounds. My point is, not everyone will do this. I'm working on the basis of "default" as most people have their PC's set up. I'm also comparing to Windows 7 default. Everything just takes longer to get to. I've actually fallen back to using the Desktop again. I can't even remember the last time I used the Desktop on 7. Everything I wanted was pinned or available via search.

You have to remember that this isn't final. The puropse of this Cinsumer Preview is for the general userbase to try it out and see if there are any serous flaws or bugs that have to be corrected. I wouldn't be suprise if these complaints have already beeen resolved for the next release.
