My task bar on the desk top in Windows 8.1 has suddenly increased in size and now covers one third of the screen. How can I reduce this back to the single line.

The task bar wasn't locked and attempts to drag or reduce the size have failed. I've tried locking and unlocking and a search through the properties screen but with no result. I can auto hide the task bar but really want it back as the single line as it is used frequently

You really did this and it did not let you resize the taskbar?

I was using the computer (a tablet) as a touch screen and that did not show the bi-directional arrow. I've installed a mouse and key board and have been able to fix the problem.

Many thanks for the advice Kari

You are welcome, good to know you got it solved. Lock the taskbar now to avoid involuntary resizing.
