How to make a folder writable

Hi

I have W8.1 fully updated, I need a folder and the files in it to be writeable, when I go to folder/properties the
attributes/Read Only have a square dot in the box, when I take the dot out and apply, a short file is run then I close the folder and go to folder/properties again and the square dot in the box is there again.

I try to click on the box and change to a tick, apply then take the tick out and apply I still get the
square dot in the box when I go to folder/properties.

It doesn't matter what I do the program I am installing want writable and will not install properly.

How do I make a folder and the files in it fully writable?

Thanks for your advice.

This does not make it clear what I am to do,
there are three selections shown and that is not
possible as far as I can tell.

I do not know how to proceed.

All folders created will have the square dot by default. It does not mean that the folder is read-only. It is an internal flag to allow user to mark all folders/files in it to be marked as read-only all at once.

For example: if you create a folder then move a bunch of files into it. By right click on the folder and mark it read-only, it will then marks all files in it to be read-only, in addition if there is a sub folder, this folder will also be marked with the square dot but files under it will be marked Read-only.

Beware that the change in how ownership was done by Microsoft for Windows 8. Was done for the protection of the OS from the user's habits. Remember to change the folder ownership back to the previous setting that it was at.

@David,
You cannot change the attribute on the folder even if you take ownership. Please read my post #5 above.
If OP has problem with installation or writing file(s) to the folder then it is another problem not related to the attribute on the folder.

That is why my next machine will probably be a MAC, I gave Mac's away when W3.1 came out and I could do what I wanted, MACs
would only allow what they would allow, very frustrating BUT Windows is going the same way. I cannot even get a OS disk when I buy a new PC, just in case the user stuffs up, so I have to build my own to make up for the cost of buying a OS disk.

Oh well, that's life, if it ain't broke, break it in the name of control.

If you think using a mac is easier then my all means add this to /etc/fstab and you should find that you can access your share without any particular permission problems as you are defining uid and gid as root and 0777 for file and directory access which is (as I'm sure you'll agree) clearly simple and obvious to all concerned.
