I recently purchased this Acer Aspire V3-531 laptop to replace my Acer Aspire netbook which had provided faultless service for 3 years. The new laptop works well, however, I have an intermittent problem when the laptop will shutdown/restart mostly straight after waking from sleep mode and once while idle.

First post on here and my tech levels are basic/competent. Any assistance would be appreciated.

it could be that it is overheating and then it shuts down

You could also try uninstalling Norton 360 AV temporarily and use Windows defender to eliminate Norton AV.

It's definitely not an overheating issue. Was purchased on eBay as a refurbished item, can return to seller but am keen to find a solution as I feel it is an OS issue. Am trying the antivirus idea and will see how we go. Cheers for now guys, any further ideas most welcome.

Go into Event Viewer (Windows Key + X > Event Viewer) and look for any critical errors under 'Summary of Administrative Events'.

After you are done with that, hit your Windows Key + X again, this time choose "Command Prompt (Admin)".

Highlight the command below and copy it:

powercfg /a

Now place your mouse cursor on the blinking command prompt cursor and push the rt. mouse button once (which will paste the command).

Report back your results from both.

On this advice I uninstalled 360 A/V and thus far (4 days) have had no random restarts or shutdowns. I will monitor for a while longer but hopefully this has sorted the problem, I am now using Windows Defender. Is this A/V secure enough?

Still having problems!!

The problems have returned. I shutdown laptop at night and on power up everything sets up then it will just restart again randomly. Could Opera cause this as this is generally opened first, I am using an older version of Opera which has bookmarks. The only hardware attached is a hid compliant mouse. One of the warnings in event viewer relates to Broadcom Ethernet Link but this is not attached. This is the last event log:
