Solved Could not find recovery environment

Last week, I purchased an Acer Aspire v5-473g Windows 8.1 pre-installed laptop. The first thing I did is to partitioning the hard drive with EaseUS Partition Master. After that, I want to create a USB recovery drive but I found out that I was unable to do so.

When I launch the recovery drive program build in in Windows, I found out that the "Copy the recovery partition from the PC to the recovery drive" option has been grey out. If I continue the program, it would shows "We can't create a recovery drive on this PC. Some required files are missing".
Capture.PNGCapture1.PNG

In addition, I also found out that I was unable to reset nor refresh Windows 8.1.
Picture1.png

One thing I am sure is that I did not mess up with the all those system reserved OEM partitions( including the one push reset partition) when I partition the drive. Those partitions should be present and intact.

After doing some research on the internet, some say that I need to mount the system recovery image (the "Push Button Reset\ RecoveryImage\ install.wim") using the "reagentc.exe". But I notice that I was not able to use reagentc.exe.
When I input reagentc.exe /info, reagentc.exe /disable, or reagentc.exe /enable, or all other commands using "reagentc.exe", it gives error: operation failed 3.

So how can I now create a USB recovery drive, or how can i perform reset now?

Please help.

Something goes wrong

Hi All,

Same situation than Tomhc, same problem, same everything ... except that after the point 4 in the procedure recommended by topgundcp, I get a message "No volume has been secified".

If I try to list the volumes, the Recovery doesn't appear (i appears when I list the partitions)

Any ideas?

Thanks for your help.

Cheers.

Thanks Amlung.

Will try this when I'll be back from my business trip.

Sounds crazy to be in such a mess just after having partionned the HDD with EaseUs Partition Master Portable Edition.

Any feedback on this software?

Cheers

Yes, don't use it.

Note: If you have an OEM PC that came with Windows 8 preinstalled, you may not use the third-party partition software (for example, EaseUS Partition Master), because modifying the hard disk partition structure usually breaks the factory restore feature. But if you use Windows Disk Management to shrink the C: partition (see screenshots below), then refresh and reset should work, even if you have the 350 MB or 450 MB recovery partition after the C: partition.

Also some info about reagentc /info link

Hi All,

Regarding the use of EaseUs Partition Master Portable Ed., I used it because the W8.1 embedded tool refused to shrink system partition under 235 Go. Even if Windows is known to be fond of HDD space when getting older, that appeared to be a little too much.

Regarding my initial issue, it’s solved!

Here is the complete sequence I followed :

  1. open the admin command
  2. diskpart
  3. List disk ---> identify the system disk. For me = disk 0
  4. select disk 0
  5. List partition --> 2 partitions called OEM ( 1 of 600Mo, the other one of 17Go). For me partition 1 & 7
  6. select partition 1
  7. set id=de94bba4-06d1-4d40-a16a-bfd50179d6ac
  8. select partition 7
  9. set id=de94bba4-06d1-4d40-a16a-bfd50179d6ac
  10. select partition 1
  11. assign letter=R
  12. exit
  13. reagentc.exe /setreimage /path R:\Recovery\WindowsRE /target C:\windows
  14. exit (from the Admin command)

then follow the normal procedure to generate the Recovery USB stick

Thanks to those who master their topic and share it and particularly to Amlung who helped me. You made my day.

Hopefully, one day, thanks to forums like this one, I will reach the appropriate level to help the others as I was helped!!

All the best.

Post a screenshot of reagentc /info and list partition. Alt-PrtScr copies the active window to the clipboard.

Open an elevated command prompt and type (or copy and paste) the following commands:

reagentc /info

diskpart
select disk 0
list partition

reagentc info and list partition.png

Hi, I need some help, I have 3 recovery partitions, one is a 17GB Acer recovery, then there are two recoveries created by Win 8 and Win 8.1. One of 400MB and one of 450MB (see Disk Management screenshot below).

Screenshot (3).png

Now my questions are,

1) Which one is the Win 8.1 recovery?

2) When following topgundcp's instructions, should I assign the drive letter to the Win 8.1 recovery or to the Acer recovery?

NOTE: I have currently assigned the drive letter R: to the Acer recovery (17GB partition), only to realise that it does not have the correct path. How do I remove the drive letter?

Thanks in advance :)

I have currently assigned the drive letter R: to the Acer recovery (17GB partition), only to realise that it does not have the correct path. How do I remove the drive letter?

Restart the computer.

Great, so if I link the 450MB partition to Windows RE and have the 17GB as the recovery image, Acer Recovery Management will be able to create a recovery drive with Windows 8.1 and all the Acer drivers and bloatware right?

Also, is it safe to delete the Windows 8 recovery partition?

Thanks a lot :)

If the "reagentc /info" command also displays the location of the recovery image partition. Here is info about reagentc /info -> link

But you may be unable to create a recovery drive, if the fault is somewhere else.

If the recovery drive is created successfully, it will reinstall Windows 8 from the recovery USB flash drive, even if Windows 8 is updated to Windows 8.1.

Also, is it safe to delete the Windows 8 recovery partition?

It's a good idea to leave the partition on the hard disk.

The recovery drive was created successfully, so I guess it worked, even though I set the Windows RE image location as the 450MB Windows 8.1 partition and not the 400MB Windows 8 partition.

Thanks for your help :)

You can test your Windows 8 recovery USB flash drive.

- Do not change the default UEFI firmware (BIOS) settings (for example, the boot order of drives).
- Connect your Windows 8 recovery USB flash drive.
- Restart the computer.
- Press the correct key to enter the boot menu (see this link for help).
- Select your USB flash drive from the boot menu.

- Select your language and keyboard layout (if displayed).

- Select the Troubleshoot option (see screenshot below).

Select the Troubleshoot option.png

- Select the Refresh your PC or Reset your PC option (see screenshot below).

Select the Refresh your PC or Reset your PC option.png

- "Choose a target operating system" (if displayed).
- "Choose an account to continue" and "Enter the password for this account" (if displayed).

All should be okay if you receive the following screen (see screenshots below).

Note: Select the Cancel option.
