Let's Take a Vote!!!!

yes absolutely, that was my only complaint about windows 8. I vote yes it should include the traditional start button on the traditional desktop.

I said no.
Because Start menu is boring. I'm always use Quick Launch to launch desktop apps and using Start Menu to launch Metro Apps.
And disable the Windows Media Centre. This apps use more resources than in Windows 7.
Please add more animations in desktop and Start Menu. This animation is not enough, not eye-catching.
And insert Microsoft Office 2010 starter.
And insert more wallpaper.
And insert Sample Videos (like Windows 7).
And availability to change system fonts in Windows 8.
And insert more pre-installed Metro Apps.
And...

I think MS should offer the new Start Screen for Windows 7 also. A lot better then the Start Menu.

I'm afraid Steven Sinofsky has already said there'll be no return for the 'traditional' start button/menu, they even removed the 'hack' from the Developer Preview, which allowed people to add it back, so don't hold you breath.

That aside, I personally don't feel one way or the other about the start button/menu. I do, however, think there needs to be either, better instruction on how to navigate the traditional desktop, now that one of its most familiar features has been removed or some, easy way, other than keyboard shortcuts, to switch back to Metro. As sure as eggs are eggs, there will be a lot of people - witness the recent video - who will be completely stumped and will likely get frustrated and that leads nowhere good.

No.

Because the Start Screen IS the new start menu. Microsoft has put forth a TON of effort on building it for touch and mouse. Setting that aside, it would be a HIGHLY difficult sell for Windows 7 users to say to them, "We have a new version of Windows called Windows 8. It is literally exactly like Windows 7, but more faster. You want to buy?" No, it won't happen.

No on you! lol :) I use this a lot with my ancient ATI Remote Wonder II to watch videos when I feel like lying down too, instead of being at the pc. Sometimes I use MediaPortal instead, depending on my mood, but they both work very well.

The WMC doesn't use any resources in any way besides when it is running.

Seems to work for Apple.

But then again, mac os only commands less than 10 percent of the OS marketshare, and as for iOS; apple has done well in brainwashing a new generation of apple followers.

A difficult sell to you maybe.

I'd be willing to buy a better performing, lower resource using and more secure OS.
Businesses would have no problems buying it either (assuming that the price is right).

"Windows 8."
"
Better performance!"
"Improved security!"
"Runs on current hardware!"
"
No retraining required!"

It practically sells itself.

No, it won't happen.

I agree that they won't change course now..

MS (Sinofsky) have invested so much time and effort telling everybody that they know best, that they won't make any changes now.

There obviously would be people that would do that for such, but for the normal, everyday consumer, especially in these day, no they wouldn't upgrade to 8 from 7. Heck, I probably wouldn't mitigate all the 7 installs I've done in the past few years to 8 for that reason. Sure, Windows 8 is faster and better and all, but it seems like I could just maintain those 7 installations for max performance and call it good. I would only do Windows 8 installs on new systems because that's what's new and the such. But to go to my dad, which I installed 7 over vista on his PC last year and have dealt with the frustration of such, and say, "Oh, by the way, there's a new Windows that is literally like 7, but faster." My dad would tell me 7 is fine for him. If I were to go to my brother and say such, he would pass. If I were to go to all the people I have installed Windows 7 on their PCs and say such, most of them would pass unless if their systems are running terribly slow. Face it, the main thing that makes the distinction from 7 is the Start Screen. Without it, a common person probably wouldn't care for it. If it's not something that looks and feels different, most, not all, would dismiss it.

The everyday consumer doesn't upgrade anyway, they wait for their PC to die and have to take whatever OS the new one they buy comes with.

In my PC, first time using WMC is so slow, many lag. In Windows 7, first time using WMC is smooth although I have many extras in WMC.

The Start Page is neater, gives you information without opening an app, easier to customise and standardizes your OS on all your gadgets. And we get the extra bonus of cool gadgets and games from the market.

There are multiple options to create shortcuts on the desktop and the taskbar. Although I use many programs and documents, In the weeks that I've used W8 I've only created one shortcut, and that's a shortcut to a Excel price list that sits on my taskbar. But I might see if that can go on the Start Page :)
