Solved Windows 8.1 Will not Boot After Last Autoupdate from MS

My memory is that on Thursday (Aug 14/2014) updates were installed when I shut the computer down in the evening. It started up normally on Friday. However this AM Saturday Aug 16, it will not boot up. I first get a screen saying "Preparing Automatic Repair" with a long pause. There is then a screen that only lasts a few seconds which says "Diagnosing your PC". When it goes away there is a screen with some options and a dialog something like this: Automatic Repair, Your PC did not start correctly, with the Options to Restart (which just starts the cycle again), or Advanced. One of the advanced options is to Refresh your system. I tried that, but it asks for a Windows install disk. I only have a 8.0 disk, and when I put it in, I get a message that the disk is not valid. Perhaps it is looking for version 8.1 which I do not have on a disk, and just updated to 8.1 on line. So that is a no go. I am afraid of the Restore Point option because I am unsure is restore is turned on, and when the last restore point might be.

Any suggestions? It seems highly suspicious that this may have been caused by the last MS update. I use a SSD for C: which has Windows installed on it. I also use a Win 8 Storages Spaces for data storage. Two HDDs are combined to one D:.

My computer is still totally stoned. I can only get a menu of repair options, but even the Safe Mode options will not work. I can get the command line to kind of work, but it seems to think the default drive is now X:. I found this link which suggest this fix:

"Delete fntcache.dat from c:\windows\system32"

Any thoughts about the wisdom of doing that?

How do you get help from Microsoft? In over 20 years of using a PC I have never had to resort to that before.

I had the same problem. Did a system restore and then did all of the updates EXCEPT the optional one (which MS has now taken off the list). That resolved it.

I tried the Microsoft fix, but still have the same problem. I seem to have the restore option, but I don't know if I have any recent restore point. Does it tell you the date of the restore point? If not, I'm saving that option as a very last resort. It may take me back to the date of my update from 8 to 8.1.

Boot into safe mode and check installed updates. if you have KB2975719, uninstall it and reboot. This is the one that has caused the most problems and why Microsoft has pulled it.

I broke down, and for the first time in over 20 years I called Microsoft for help. It was a bit of a wait and after I finally got a live tech on the line, the problem has been resolved. Safe Mode attempts did not work. They finally convinced me to use the System Restore. It appeared to fail, but on a reboot it brought up Windows for the first time since Friday, and displayed a message that it did work. Tech did a bunch of manual changes to the updates and registry, as well as reloaded updates twice. Took over an hour, and now seems to be working.

The Restore does bring up a screen and shows the restore point date options.

Good news for you...
Now make System Recovery Drive of your current OS.
Then prior to every windows update make a system restore point, or a backup.

Sounds like a good idea. How do you do it?

1. Making a system disk for 8.1?
2. Restore point prior to windows update? Does that mean turning off auto update? and doing a manual Restore? If so how do you do that. From what I saw today, it appears Windows Updates to not automatically create a restore point. It was other software installations (like a Java update, and a Garmin update) that created available restore points for me.

You can pick different restore points. I went with one that was about 4 days prior.
