Windows 8 can't go past Login Screen

Hello everyone I have an Asus Laptop that I'm trying to fix for my nephew. After installing a game of Minecraft he claims that around that time, the computer has not been able to boot. So he brought it over to me, and I'm not to familiar with Windows 8. So I try turning on the laptop and it freezes at the login screen. It has his username, and the little loading screen like its trying to load the account, then it freezes and it stops there. So what I'm trying to do is a system restore to an earlier time. Maybe even to boot into safe mode. I have been in google looking for solutions and found a couple in this forums. Except all the tutorials on how to access System Restore is to hold shift while restarting the computer. Except I can't access the computer. It doesn't go past the login screen. I can go into the BIOS, but nothing else. Anyone know of a method were I can do something to access system recovery another way? Any ideas on what I can do besides a system restore? If you need more information I can explain futher but simply put.. Turn on, goes past the Asus loading screen, gets to login screen, username is displayed. Computer freezes. Sometimes it just goes to a black screen and stops there.

After leaving it on all night it loaded and I was able to do a disk repair, found an error but could not fix. I restarted and left it on for another couple of hours and it loaded into windows. Except its running really slow, freezing at the same time, is there a way I can perform a disk repair or a software i can use, while windows is active?

Hi, it is most probably a graphics related issue. Please update the graphics driver to the most recent version.

Good luck,werty

If your HD is corrupted and you could not fix it then that's your problem, some system files might be corrupted and Windows cannot read causing a long delay.

Open the Admin command prompt: Win+X->Command Prompt (Admin)
Type: chkdsk /r /f C: Note: there are spaces between /r , /f and C
Since it is a Windows drive, it will reboot then do the disk repair offline. This process will take a long long time, I have seen cases it would take 24 hrs depending on how badly corrupted is your HD, so please be patient, let it run over night.

After your HD is fixed. To fix any corrupted system files you need to run again from the Admin Command prompt:
  1. Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  2. sfc /scannow Note: you might need to run multiple times untill you get a message: did not find any integrity violation
