I'd like to add that the CD/DVD writeable media will start to break down over time - not good for long term storage (10 or so years maybe.) I have old DVD+RW media I used for backups which started to fail at about 10 years. USB flash/SSD drives have a limited number of writes so they should be replaced from time to time - though if they're not written to often they should last well over 10 years I would think. And regular hard drives in USB enclosures, as always, have more of a propensity toward failure in general - too many possible points of failure in comparison. Used regularly I'd replace regular hard drives after about five years. You should do more research to validate my claims, however; this is all off the top of my head though I have done quite a bit of research on the matter in the past.
