Anyone still wrestling with the 'Thumbnails deleted' issue, or similar, please, go ahead and post your progress and/or findings.

EDIT:
I've tried a host of different settings and tweaks. On normal shutdown/startup most settings seemed to preserve the icon/thumbnail cache, but a 'restart' always seems to spoil it!...
Until I changed: Registry - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM - 'AlwaysHibernateThumbnails' value to 1(hex)

Original post still says HKCR :(

Also, no AlwaysHibernateThumbnails subkey under DWM. Did you have to add it, not modify it?

C:\Users\rrkurtz>reg query "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM"

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM
Composition REG_DWORD 0x1
ColorizationColor REG_DWORD 0x6b74b8fc
ColorizationColorBalance REG_DWORD 0x2a
ColorizationAfterglow REG_DWORD 0x6b74b8fc
ColorizationAfterglowBalance REG_DWORD 0xa
ColorizationBlurBalance REG_DWORD 0x30
ColorizationGlassAttribute REG_DWORD 0x1
EnableAeroPeek REG_DWORD 0x1
EnableWindowColorization REG_DWORD 0x0

Not trying to be a pain, just trying to follow along.

Should be changed now. :)
'AlwaysHibernateThumbnails' is a DWORD in the right pane when you are at DWM.

Does setting AlwaysHibernateThumbnails to 1 still sort it for you though?

Hey Shawn,
as mentioned earlier, I've been fooling around with tons of tweaks; most seemed to work, for a while anyway.
The most successful tweak was deleting all automatic maintenance! (Believe it or not, Defender, auto-Defrag, etc. still work with auto maint. deleted!)
I was creeping toward day 7 with all folder icons and thumbnails preserved til a restart spoiled it!
However, when I set 'AlwaysHibernateThumbnails' to a value of 1, a restart DIDN'T delete icons and thumbs! Go figure!?

Still experimenting; I'll get to the bottom of this! ;)

Me too! :)

I'm a couple steps away from a clean install and starting from scratch, one tweak at a time, with heavy documentation! ;)

Having forsaken all previous attempts at this dilemma, (or putting them on the 'back burner'), here's something to experiment with:
On the taskbar, right click on File Explorer then right click on File Explorer again in the menu, choose Properties and in the Shortcut tab, change the 'Target' to 'explorer.exe';
if Target is greyed out, unpin File Explorer from the Taskbar and pin explorer.exe to the Taskbar.
So far so good on Startup but, again, on a Restart I'm not sure. Will post my findings.

I do not have File Explorer in the right click Context menu when I right click on File Explorer on the task bar and select Properties.

Wonder why you do?

I use Quick Launch, which is where the File Explorer icon resides. Perhaps that is why I see different content on a right click?
