I installed the Win 8 CP through a usb. I had 5 drives in that hard drive. After installing win 8 on C drive the "D" drive disappeared. I tried gparted and that drive was flagged as lba.I removed the flag.Next thing windows doesn't even boot. Repaired the Win again through usb setup. But now other drive got it's security permissions changed. I had to change the security permissions again to access that drive. Even in easeus partion master C drive is labeled as "boot" and that other invisible drive as "system". How can i get my drive back without messing up windows again?

Most important. Why does windows has to mess another drive when i installed it in other drive?

Windows likes to put the \Boot folder on a hidden active system volume so it is less likely to be tampered with. It likes to put the \Windows system folders on the boot volume, usually with the c:\ drive letter. Happens to me all the time. I tend to give the system volume the B:\ drive letter, since I never would use a second floppy drive, although Windows sometimes considers this drive to be removable, it doesn't like to hide the drive letter.

It is to do with the drive letter system, which I consider to be well past its sell-by-date, and the Windows 7 (or was it Vista?) process of separating boot and system partitions. I wish it would go the whole hog and remove swapfiles to swap partitions, programs, user files, and data and metafiles to dedicated partitions so that they don't all get mixed up, and remove the drive letter system, replacing it with something more flexible.

Sorry, you just need to give it a drive letter to unhide it.

You may need to give anything you use under Windows full ownership or elevated permissions.

You have Easeus that can do it, Diskmgmt.msc and in Gparted, I can't remember if assigning a drive letter is possible.

In diskpart you need to select the disk (diskpart sel disk 0), select the partition (diskpart sel part 1) or select the volume (diskpart sel vol 1) and use the assign command (diskpart assign letter=b) for example. If you use diskpart always check using list disk, list vol, or list part before issuing a command which might make a major change to the drive structure.

It's only hidden for the Windows 8 system - drive letters are just translations of the volume number and drive {guid} in the registry, your other windows system (if you have windows 7) should still be ok.
