Hello everyone,

The attached video will NOT win the Youtube film of the year award, however, I hope that someone might be able to help. My Dell XPS8700 is like a 16 year old, friendly one minute and totally nuts the next for no reason at all! The computer DOES boot, but there's no beep and well...I would love it if someone could help please!

Many thanks in advance...

James

"This video is Private" is the message I get when I try to view it.
Judging by symptoms it could be
Power supply
Capacitors on MB going dry or faulty
Hard disk bad sectors or file system
MB, 3v CMOS battery gone empty
If you fix problem with video, something else might be gleamed from it.

OK. just watched it, from here it looks like you might have problems with HDD. Once it boots up check it good for bad sectors.
Have you ever open the case ? After just couple of years something can go wrong with connectors for power and any plug in cards. Since computers are best dust collecting devices ever invented (at least my impression), check for that too. Visually check all electrolytic capacitors on the MB, if any of them has a bulge on top it's faulty for sure. Just one bad one can make problems like that.

Cheers Mike, silly question now, in order to check for bad sectors, do I just run a standard disk check? Image attached...
Many thanks for your advice

Great, much much quicker, thanks Mike! Ok, so there's no beep when I boot up, but I suppose that's not the end of the world...is it?!
It's a PC so it's never going to boot as fast as a MAC, I know that's a dirty word to PC people..!
Cheers though, I'll run this beast into the ground before I go to the dark side...

Adding an SSD can make a world of difference specially with Win8. Overall responsiveness is greatly improved and boot speeds can be as short as 5 seconds depending on system and startup programs. My relatively modest system without fast boot UEFI, without Win8 "Fast startup" (because hyberfill is turned off) and 9 startup programs including AV, starts up completely in 12 seconds since I push Start button. I mean, it's connected to internet, comm programs are up and registered etc. Don't know why I did not get it before. In contrast to that, my dual boot Win7, installed on a HDD (admirably not a very fast one) takes almost 2 minutes to boot just to usable state. If you have SATA 3 or even SATA2 but with AHCI setting in BIOS you should seriously consider an SSD for Widows system at least. Does not have to be fastest one or very large or expensive. Office programs open in 2 seconds flat with a document in it, Firefox takes less than a second and most other programs up to 2-3 seconds if installed on that SSD.
