Solved White border on 8.1 Start Menu tiles

I've noticed that when booting to the Start Menu on powering up that there's now a white border around the top left tile. This border can be moved to any adjacent tile by using the relevant keyboard arrow keys.

My other PC's only show the border AFTER an arrow key is pressed which is classed as the correct default behaviour after a bit of Googling. I can't find any explanation for the mysterious behaviour at switch on.

It's not causing any problems but I'd love to know what the reason is. Any help would be most welcome.

Hello Keverne,

On startup, the top left tile on the Start screen is selected by default. If you open the Start screen while already in Windows, then the tile will not be selected by default.

The white border is to indicate that it's selected. If you like, you are able to change the background color to also change this border color to a slightly lighter shade of the same color.

Hope this helps some, :)

Thanks Brink,

Yes, I understand that it is the selected tile by default. As I mentioned however, the white border should only be displayed if the keyboard is used to navigate.

There is white border around an icon - Microsoft Community

If I go to the Start screen from the conventional Windows desktop the tile has a white border without the keyboard being touched. Completely different behaviour from my other machines.

Puzzling.

I'm not sure what could be causing it since I can't reproduce it. For me, I have to press an arrow key to see the white border. Otherwise, the pointer over a tile will cause the selected color border.

Yes, that's what I see on my other PCs.

The hunt goes on...

brkkab123,

That certainly could be the reason here as it was probably about the time of the updates that this started.

Not sure why only one out of four though.

It seem's so. It's weird none of the magazine websites or newsletter's about Windows I subscribe to have posted anything about it.

I'm used to it now , so I'll just leave it. Most of my time is spent on the desktop anyway.
