In WIN 8.1 - unlike past versions that I'm familiar with - I am unable to move individual windows too far off screen without them being forced to minimize. Any fixes? Thanks....

Hi Shelley, welcome to Windows EightForums! :)

Would you be talking about Modern App windows or desktop application windows?

Edwin -

My apologies - it took me a long time just to figure out how to send a reply back to you.

I don't know the terms your using - all I can say for certain is this was WIN 8.0 upgraded to 8.1, which came with my laptop when I bought it. I don't think the version of Windows is anything special.

I'm looking forward to your help - thanks.

Hi Shelley,
What Window are you trying to move; and move to where; and what is the negative result you are experiencing?

Edwin and JDobbsy –

What I’m looking at is like JDobbsy’s screen (above) where there are two windows open on the Desktop. If one of the windows, eg Word, is moved too far off the screen then it goes down to the bar at the bottom.

Similarly, if I have a window open (eg Excel) which covers the entire desktop (maximized?), then I open a different window of a smaller size (eg Explorer) and put it on top of the maximized Excel window (eg for comparing information), the Excel window will drop to the bottom bar – out of sight. I know I can maximize it again – though some times it just goes off the screen yet again, maybe because the smaller window is still up there.

This happens with anything I open – Office products, any browser, Paint, Adobe, downloaded tools, etc.

It seems they’re tying to force me to do what they think I want done, which they probably think is an improvement

Again, thank you very much for your help.

Shelley

There might be 3 problems here, that I can see.

The first is what happens when your cursor goes too far off left or right. If you're dragging a windows it will minimize or resize automatically. You'll notice a white wave effect once your cursor is at the border when it happens. Solution, when dragging windows, try not to let your cursor reach the left/right border.

Another thing which might be related is the Aero Shake effect. It's something that was created in Windows 7 and was left in Win 8. If you shake windows, they will all get minimized. This is actually a bit difficult to disable in Win 8, especially for Home users (you need to edit the registry). This can happen accidentally but in common usage it's actually rare. Solution : Don't shake the windows too much.
Shake - Microsoft Windows

Your problem with putting a windows on top of a maximized one is a problem of focus, once you click on the maximized one the other loses the focus and get hidden. That's normal behavior. As far as I know there's no way to force a windows on top native to Windows 8, you'll have to try 3rd party solutions. Here is a link : 5 Simple Ways To Keep Selected Windows On Top [Windows]
I'm sure there are many others, just try google ;)
