Hello Vexxum, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Windows 9 may be worth waiting for if it'll be towards late next year before you upgrade.

If you like, you can download a free 90-day trial of Windows 8.1 Enterprise at the Microsoft link below that you can install and play with to see how you like it.

Download Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation

Hope this helps, :)

I was going to put off 8 as long as possible then had to buy a new laptop. It came with 8 and freaked me out. Was ready to wipe it and install 7 but then discovered Classic Shell and other tweaks which brought 8 back to 7 experience. Of course I then upgraded to 8.1.

It is faster I believe when it comes to boot and performance. Very, very few crashes, lockups, etc. I would probably not go back to 7 although I have the disc sitting on the shelf above me as I write this.

Maybe no reason to shell out the cash for an upgrade. It came with my computer.

Oh yea, I also jumped on the $15 upgrade offer way back when and low and behold the key upgraded me to Pro instead of standard. What a deal. I didn't even have 8 installed at the time.

Btw, you can run Classic Shell on Windows 7 too. It's better than the Windows 7 Start Menu as well.

I do the testing and give feedback on User Experience and ideas for Classic Shell.
As suggested in previous posts, you could try an evaluation version of Windows 8.1, learn the basics and if you like it, make your decision from there.
If your system meets or exceeds the requirements to run Windows 8/8.1, I suggest dual booting the two operating systems as you may not experience the true speed of Windows 8/8.1 in a VM.
(The Start Menu replacement would be a personal choice.)

Make sure you create a back up of your existing setup (in case of disaster). :)
