"File directory is corrupted & unreadable" message when DL

Hi all, hoping someone can shed some light on what whats going on & how I can rectify this highly annoying situation. I'm not sure why this has started, but when I now try to DL any files or save ANY files, I get a message saying 'File directory is corrupted & unreadable'.

I tried to open an image with 'Windows Preview' & got 'Windows Photo viewer cant open this image, as the file appears to be damaged to large or corrupted' (none of which is correct)-yet I can still open ALL images by double clicking to use the windows photo/image viewer App

I also can not save anything either- I tried to take a screen shot & save it using paint- I just got the same 'File directory is corrupted & unreadable' message.

With Windows Internet Explorer, I have been trying to DL a torrent, but cant "open" the DL link (I click "open", but nothing happens), nor can I 'save it' (as I get the same 'File is corrupted & unreadable' message for both "save" options), nor can I click cancel to close the DL options box in Internet Explorer- as again, nothing happens when I click it.
To try get around these problems I tried using the magnet link option- which worked ONCE, but now even that wont work, as I cant DL the 2nd file- the DL starts (after taking ages to DL meta data- which is odd in itself), then the torrent is shortly terminated & I get the 'Error: File or directory is corrupt & unreadable' file message .

TO add to this I cant listen to a podcast with chrome either (tells me QuickTime failed to initialise Error#0) when I click "listen in a new window" & when I click "download" nothing happens at all.

EDITED: I forgot this problem has also prevented my VPN from working- I get the same Corrupted file/directory message every time I've tried to re-install it.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Please help- everything was fine yesterday- DL was fine, viewing images worked perfectly & I was able to open things in new windows without a problem.
I have tried fixing with command prompt- it said it couldn't run to find the problems, tried using the windows restore thing, again said it couldnt complete a restore due to not being able to run properly- so I'm stuck :(

Open Command Prompt as an administrator, often referred to as an "elevated" Command Prompt.

Type:

sfc /scannow

check your task manager what does it show cpu/system usage being at? If it's at 80-90-100% region a lot it's very likely you have an infected system

Kernel for Windows Data Recovery - Free download and software reviews - CNET Download.com

Thanks for the response.

I tried running Command Prompt as administer the 1st time, but tried it again as per your instructions- These are the messages I got:
"Beginning system scan. This process will take some time."
"Beginning verification phase of system scan."
"Windows Resource Protection could not preform the requested operation."

CPU usage sitting at 1%-2%. Has an average of 53%-54% Maximum Frequency.

I have already run a virus scan with Eset Nod32 Anti Virus (trial version) twice (one smart scan & one custom scan- scans pretty much everything as I tick everything) & that hasn't found any infections.

Hi there.

IMO these sort of problems are best solved by restoring a previous image of your OS

-- if you haven't got any backups make a note NOW that once your system is fixed again to TAKE BACKUPS --they don't take long and so many problems could be avoided if people just back up their systems regularly -- do it just before you go to bed if you can't be bothered during the daytime.

If you don't have any backup my only solution here would be to totally restore the OS -- something has got horribly hosed up -- and if the computer IS hosed up why on earth would you run any programs on it -- I certainly wouldn't trust any A/V removal program on a computer already infected !! -- It's like would you willingly fly a plane that you KNEW had mechanical problems !!!.

Cheers

1)Tried backing up using Norton backup- it doesnt work & after trying 5-6times, I gave it up, instead I've made a habit of regularly backing up files I cant live without to an external HD.

2)Not sure how to restore OS on a laptop that comes with everything already installed :/

3)Considering I stated already that everything was working fine, then all of a sudden it turned to custard- while my anti virus was working & that 2 scans have already been carried out & found nothing, I'm highly doubting it's a virus, but thanks for the response anyway.

If sfc can not fix something then run DSIM first and then SFC /scanow again.

SFC can only replace objects it has and DSIM replaces them if they are missing.

Here is the tutorial for DSIM http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/26512-dism-fixing-component-store-corruption-windows-8-a.html

Thanks for this info. I followed the instructions in the tutorial (Thank you for providing the link :)), but I cant get any of the DISM options to work, both "CheckHealth" & "RestoreHealth" come up with the exact same message (this would be so much easier if I could save screen shots to upload here:():

"Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 6.2.9200.16384"

"Error: 1392"

"An error occurred. The directory in temporary folder C:\Users\Surayya\AppData\Local\Temp\could not be created.
Ensure that the path to the temporary folder exists and that you have Read/Write permissions on the folder."

"The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log"

DISM ScanHealth, came up with:

"Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 6.2.9200.16384"

"Error: 1392"

"An error occurred accessing the temporary folder C:\Users\Surayya\AppData\Local\Temp\AF4F5482-18E5-4E70-9FE9-3A01C2B785E0
Ensure that the path to the temporary folder exists and that you have Read/Write permissions on the folder."

"The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log"

On the plus side, for some reason after 9 failed attempts the podcast Downloaded, as did the 2nd torrent I needed (after 5 failed attempts) & a single screen shot was able to be saved (the error message for 'failed system restore'). Don't ask me why or how they suddenly worked- all I know is it happened after the failed system restore.

Downside is I still had to use the magnet link (as problems hadn't resolved with usual DL options), still couldn't stream podcast in a new window (by simply clicking the provided link to "open in a new window"), my VPN still wont work (keeps telling me "Failed to get temp file name" now) & back to not being able to save any files after the one success.

Your choices are limited and perhaps time to do a clean install. Back up your data first.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2299-clean-install-windows-8-a.html

If you have a recovery partition in your system, use that.

It's looking that way, but given I only know the bare basics ;), I have no idea how to go about doing so- thank you for linking the tutorial, but that requires a win8 disk- my laptop came with win8 already installed & cant find a windows8 disk (or any disks for that matter), that came with it in the 1st place.... so yeah, not to sure where to go with that

I have awesome anti virus protection & also use a VPN/Proxy, so never had a problem- I also only use 'verified' torrents. This actually happened before I tried to DL the torrents (patches) I needed, I noticed it when I tried to listen to a podcast & couldn't stream it (the link automatically opens it in a new window), then couldn't DL it, then tried to DL the torrent files & that was a nightmare, then stopped working as well, which is when I noticed I couldn't save any files at all.

You probably have a recovery partition in the computer to restore to original factory settings. You may find out by going to the manufacturers site on how to proceed. If we know the computer make and model we could guide you to the proper site if you are unable to do so yourself.

Thanks so much for that, I'll get familiar with it so in the event I need it, I have it tucked away in my brain ;)

Well it looks like the problem has been resolved, without me having to anything- The action center finally popped up with the 'driver errors found. Click to repair' message, I did & bingo, no problems since- YAY!
Would have saved me some grey hairs had action center noticed the problems yesterday, but better late then never I guess ;)
Thanks for all the suggestions & help, it's much appreciated :)
