Word 2010, Win8.1 how to get hyphenation + other questions

Hello! Hope this is in the right place now... I have Windows 8.1 and my Microsoft Word 2010. My computer is in English and so is my Word. But as I live in Finland, I need to create documents in Finnish, and that is a language that uses hyphenation a lot. But it doesn't work!

I have tried: making sure that the box is marked with automatic hyphenation
selecting language as finnish
highlighting and non-highliting the text I want hyphenated
there is also a box in hyphenation options, it is also checked
editing the "normal" style option
downloading the language pack for word 2010 (it just told me no changes were made)
putting in the installin disk and "re-installing" stuff
from my computer's programs and features clicking change and "adding features".

Sometimes (and this is random, word doesn't have to be open even) my computer informs me that I need the disk to make hyphenation work. But I have used the disk.

Does anyone have any idea what to do? My university requires hyphenation in all of my essays so I am pretty desperate. Also some other quick questions if someone wants to help:

Why does my word rename each blank document, eg document 1 and next time I open it's document 2 even though I did not save anything as document 1?

Also, is there a fix so that when I for example want to bold my title, so that the rest of the text doesn' automatically go bold? It's really annoying to always click ctrl+z to get the rest of the text back to nomal.

Thanks so much if you can help!

Hi Indigo, welcome to the Eight Forums.

It might be that your Word installation is somehow corrupted and an unistall / reinstall cycle might be the best option. I just tested with both Word 2010 and 2013 and both of them have absolutely no issues using hyphenation as so often required in typing Finnish. You do not need to install a Finnish language pack to type correctly in Finnish, simply setting Finnish as default proofing language is enough:

No issues with hyphenation:

I have never even heard about Word asking for a disk in order to "make hyphenation work" as you say. Next time you get this message please post it here as a screenshot.

The naming policy of Word is simple: the first otherwise unnamed document created will be called Document 1, the next Document 2 and so on. Word does not change document names by itself. If you rename Document 1, save it with another name, the next empty document created will again be Document 1.

The issue with bold text as you describe is not typical Word behavior. If you press CTRL + B while typing or click the Bold button, Word prints everything you type in bold until you either click the Bold button or press CTRL + B again. You can also type your entire text without using the bold (also italic, underline) function and when finished, select the words one by one you want to be bold followed by a click of the bold button or CTRL + B to change only selected word to bold.

Moi Indingo, tervetuloa Kasi Foorumille.

Wordin tiedostonimikointi on looginen.

Uninstalling and re-installing did not work. And here (I hope) is a picture of the error message.

Also tried setting Finnish as the default proofing language, doesn't make a difference.

Thank you for the other answers though. I think my problem was using the no spacing style, which for some reason is always automatic.

That's interesting, I have learned something new today.

Check this solution I found now at our sister site Seven Forums: Disable forever ""Word hyphenation feature is not avai" - Windows 7 Help Forums. The solution is for Office 2007 but should work as such in Office 2010.

Follow the instructions and add Hyphenation as told:

Looks like when installing Microsoft Office or standalone Word you have selected default installation settings which will not install all additional Word features. I did not know about Word asking for a disk because I always select installing all features, not accepting default Office installation settings. My mistake, I should have checked this before posting.

Do you have particularly long words in Finnish? Just curious...

Yes, we have. Combined with compound rule that if the first word in a compound ends with the same letter than the second word begins, the words are separated with a hyphen, this makes some real word monsters.

For example, a bus driver in Finnish is linja-autonkuljettaja (linja = line, route, auto(n) = car, kuljettaja = driver). We also make compounds of the words written separately in other languages like City Planning Office = kaupunkisuunnitteluvirasto (kaupunki = city, suunnittelu = planning, virasto = office) or Traffic Planning Committee = liikennesuunnittelulautakunta (liikenne = traffic, suunnittelu = planning, lautakunta = committee).

Words up to over 10 letters are really common.

Thank you for answering, unfrotunately it still doesn't work. I will post pictures if you would be so kind as to check if I have done everything correctly?
PC Settings -> Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features
Then:

Even tried doing the same for French and Spanish since there was no Finnish. Also re-installed the whole program today and have restarted the computer after "installing" these features.
