I wouldn't know as I haven't tried the DP version, but I'll be careful. I've managed to change one of the stock Metro icons and I'll be working on others as time goes by.

Unable to Pin to Start [at this point in time]

Hey Michael, could you row this boat ashore?

I'm having no luck at all in enabling these shortcuts to be Pinned to Start.
If you find a way, let me know.

I've been able to place both onto a Quick Launch Toolbar and onto the Desktop.

My goal is to have an empty Desktop and no Quick Launch, but for now it seems that's
an impossibility.

Thanks
Windunce

You just want those to appear on the Metro start menu right? Hmmm... I haven't tried anything like that yet, but if I do, I'll certainly post.

What I am trying to do is replace the IE icons with those that would represent the site I have pinned. An example would be the site logo for the on-line radio portion of Antenne Bayern, the on-line newspaper, The Local, etc. Not quite sure how to do that yet. I found the folder where those logo's are kept and have added a couple but I can't seem to link the logo's to the pinned icons.

It does work for the store icons. I mentioned that I was able to change the 'Map' icon with one that I selected, resized, and followed the naming practise of the logo that was already there. Now it references my custom logo.

Windunce, How to pin windows stuff to your Metro interface:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\System Tools

Copy any system shortcut into this folder
Go to the Metro screen and right click on the background and click on all apps
Go look for the Windows system set of icons. Your added shortcut should appear in this list.
Right click on the icon you want to display and pin it to Start.

It should now show up. Here are three that I added myself... Restart, run, and change when the computer sleeps

If you want a list of premade shortcuts go to (wherever the hell I put the Win7 x64 shortcuts.zip file).Hell, I will just reload it...

You can run into problems by actually taking ownership of the whole C:\Windows\System32 folder. It causes errors in certain things. It's been a long time since Windows 7 beta so I forget, but then it caused users headaches. Best to just take ownership of what you actually need to.

It's actually very cool seeing how all different people customize the start menu to their needs, compared to the default setup Microsoft presents us with.

Good job!

It's a done deal. THANKS

I'm gonna cry. Cry, cry cry....96 Tears.
Tears of joy, over your 96th post.
You da man. Ethernet Properties and Windows Switcher are now home on the Start Screen.
THANKS!

For your next magical trick, try to pull this rabbit out of the hat.
A few have bemoaned that the Immersive Control Panel Icon, that was a fixture on the
Developers Preview Start Screen is no longer pinned there by default in Consumers Preview.

I found the link to it here:
c:\Users\All Users\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Immersive Control Panel.lnk

and like the others, I copied it over to here:

c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\System Tools\Immersive Control Panel.lnk

but it's gone invisible for some reason in All Apps. Got any clues about that one?

But never the less, thanks a ton for your tip and the zip!

Win,
You are welcome. As far as I can tell, Immersive Control Panel was only part of the Developer's Preview and is not available on the Consumer Preview. It is replaced by the More PC Settings under the charms bar settings. Is that what you want added to the Metro app menu? If so, I do not know where that lives as I looked for it desperately when I accidentally deleted it a while ago.

Yup, that's it.
WinKey-I and then click More PC Settings in Consumers Preview.

But why they removed that default [White Gear/Control Panel] from the CP is beyond me.
I can still boot to DP and I did copy a few files from DP to CP but to no avail.

So WinKey -I and click it shall be.
And I'll be sure NOT to Unpin that Icon in the DP!
