Far microsoft has come from windows 8 to windows 8.1u1.

- The integration of OneDrive into File Explorer.
- Being able to snap apps to 50/50 instead of just 25 or 75 % of the screen.
- ThisPC being a much better default location for File Explorer to open-up to, instead of Libraries, which I personally never used.
- The fact that we can now resize Start Screen icons with more customization.

I'm sure there's more instances I'm forgetting.

Anyways... I'm working on a Surface Pro 1, and I'm wondering if I move the recovery data off to a USB Pendrive, how does that affect my ability to use the built-in Refresh and Restore features in the future? Will they be useless unless I always have that USB pendrive to hand?

Copying the factory recovery partition to the recovery drive is "supposed" to let you do a Reset or Refresh from the Recovery Drive with no need for the one on the actual hard drive. From what I've seen it doesn't always work out that way though. In answer to your question, it should work as intended regardless of whether you make a recovery drive or not. It just copies the recovery image to the thumb drive, it doesn't alter anything on the hard drive. I made a recovery drive when I got my laptop and did a recovery after that without using it. I did it all from the hard drive via doing a Windows Reset.
