Solved Control Panel Charm

Here is one of those silly little quirks that drives me crazy about Windows 8 & 8.1

When you click settings on the charm bar, it will present different options (at the top) depending if you are on the desktop or Start screen, WHY? Why does it simply not show all options (there are only a few), no matter which screen you are on. It just makes it that much harder to get lost, if I have to remember precisely how to access each function.

DRIVES ME ^#$@ing NUTS!!

Hello RBS,

This was done by design, and is not a quirk.

It would be nice, but then you would have to many options available that may have to scroll, and not all related to where (ex: desktop VS modern UI) you are at.

Thank you for the clarification, I thought it to be and oversight.

I think it is BY poor design then, and the assessment does not hold up under scrutiny. It is about 2 options, the control panel and PC info, it seems to me those are 2 things that should always be easily available and pertain to either section, and certainly doesn't make it so the area has to be scrolled.

Personally, I feel the two methods (desktop and start screen) need to be meld together more and not separated. I believe that is why it has caused so much of a split in the community, by design it is too conflicted.

You also have the Personalization option that performs differently depending on if settings is opened from the desktop or Start screen.

Yes and the help menus are screen specific, which is fine and makes sense. I just feel the control panel and PC Info should be available in both areas, just my opinion.

Doesn't matter, it is what it is, it won't change, sorry I even brought it up, I wasn't planning a debate on the topic, I was simply making a comment, and by "quirk" I meant it was a peculiar twist, by design or not.

No worries. I just took it as a nice discussion.

Maybe by Windows 9 the desktop and modern UI will be more seamless. :)

No thank you.

I dread the thought of another software change, I doubt I will try Windows 9, what would be the point, more new "quirk's"? I think I have had enough of those to last me a good while. I have XP, 7 & 8, they serve my needs.

Do u use virtalbox?

If you are addressing me, my answer is yes I have used it.

I have tried VMWare (VMPlayer free version), Microsoft Virtual Software and Windows 8 Client Hyper-V, also. I haven't played much with the Hyper-V, I usually use VMPlayer, it just seem's easier, for me, to use. My least favorite was the Microsoft's Virtual Software.

It has been quite a while since I have used any of them though...

Control Panel you can have on Desktop, Task bar, and Start screen too. PC Settings on Taskbar too. Control Panel is on charms bar under the Settings. Also on right click menu on Start Button or thru console, Run command or even search. It can be accessed from most anywhere. I think of this as being helpful not a "Quirk".

LOL You name every place that it can be, except where I think it should be.

My point was, I knew I could access the control panel from the charms bar by clicking settings, what I didn't know was that you have to be in desktop mode. I was on the Start menu and couldn't find it, I spent an hour thinking some update had removed it or I was crazy and dreamed it was there. This is what I dislike most about Win 8. For me, it is too disjointed... it just doesn't flow well. I don't want it on my Desktop or on my taskbar, it is fine on the Charms bar, if it was only there all the time, the same for PC Info.

Again I was stating an opinion, no more, no less, I guess I was just being "quirky" in my reasoning. Let us move on to better topics.

Or:

I hope this info is helpful. :)

EDIT--- Right click Control Panel to get a check mark in it & press the Space Bar & click Pin to Start.

EDIT #2---

PC Info & System in Control are the same thing.
You can pin System to the Start page too:

I like having as many options to access something as possible, I have God Mode too. Just one example, I have at least 6 places in the house for opening entrance gate in addition to a wireless remote. In Windows it saves a lot of wear and tear of the mouse and K, plus I don't have to remember where everything is.
