Ownership of Registry Keys?

I have come across an issues with potential problems with ownership of registry keys on my machine.

Up until now, I was not aware that registry keys had owners, like directories. Why is this?
Is there any link between the ownership of directories and registry keys.

I haven't deliberately changed ownership of Registry keys, is there any way they can have been inadvertently changed through some other Windows function or Program.

I wonder if anyone can tell me more about this, and if there is anyway to simply reset ownership for the standard Windows keys.

Thanks everyone, that's a lot of great advice!

I am worried that I might set the ownership incorrectly though!
For example there are some rather obscure users that are supposed to have ownership of certain directories and folders.
How would I know what's the default?

See the link in post #2. You can automatically re-set the defaults. If you want to know what they are look in this file:
%windir%\inf\defltbase.inf (You can see it by typing :winkey: + R and then pasting in the path in bold.

Is there a particular key you are worried about?

You can reset permissions using secedit or Microsoft fixit 50198 - see here Reset Windows Security settings to default values in Windows 8 | 7

Like other permissions the idea is to stop programs and to a lesser extent users changing things they should not be authorised to.

Hi Adam, thanks so much for this advice! It looks like it will do what I said, but I'm just worried that it is VERY drastic.
I have tweaked my machine quite a lot and it would be good to know exactly what this does?

For example, why does it remove the user accounts?
My User's folders have been moved to D: will that be affected in the reset, or will the User folders be modified in any way?
I'm going to back them up before I do anything and will keep checking in if anyone responds.

Hit Enter.
After you run this, the standard user accounts may no longer appear on the logon screen when you re-start your computer or try to switch users. This occurs because standard user accounts are removed from the Users group when you reset Windows security settings.

I have cloned my C drive, so if anything goes wrong, I'll just revert to the backup.

Ok, I did it.... no noticeable difference so far.... But the log lists a number of changes.
