HP Laptop--recovery through extended monitor

I have acquired an HP Envy M6 laptop (AMD version with ATI graphics) and I want to do a factory reset on it so I can customize it for me. Problem is the screen is broke so I have been using it with an external monitor until I can order the replacement screen. Problem I am running into is the extended monitor will not show BIOS screens or any of the recovery screens because no signal is directed to the extended monitor until it gets into windows 8. Is there a way to make it show boot screens or any screens it cycles through prior to getting into windows?

The broke screen illuminates and occasionally shows some of the desktop at the very bottom but I cannot see anything that I need to. I would like to go ahead and reset it so when I get the new screen it will be ready to go. Thanks in advance.

hello and welcome to eightfourms ,I think you answered your own question ,it dosnt show until it boots to windows ,,I don't know of any way to make it do so ,! my opinion ,the length of time it now takes to setup in8 is low,so you might be best off to just wait till you get the new screen ,good luck

having said all that I just remembered something , check this tutorial out for running system recovery

That looks like it might work. I am new to windows 8 so not aware of all it's tricks yet. Will try that when I get home.
