Computer boots up until the Windows Icon, then turns off.

Howdy.

Today I ran into an issue I can't seem to be able to track down (strictly speaking, it happened once a couple of days ago, but after rebooting it disappeared).

I turn the computer on, and it goes through POST; no problems there, both disks are detected. Then the computer starts Windows (8.1.1) proper, however all I see is the blue Window icon at the top of the screen. At this point the computer just shuts down entirely. I have no idea what's going on; it has been working fine so far. Also, this is a fresh-ish install (1 week old or so), with all drivers installed correctly.

Any ideas what's going on?
I'd rather not have to reinstall the whole OS again.

Thanks!

Can you get a picture of the Screen you are seeing? If it is a big smiley (frown) face, it might be Blue Screening. If that were the case, you may want to jump over to the BSOD forum.

Was the system activated?

1) If by "activated" you mean its product key is in and valid, then yes. The picture I see is sort of like this towards the top of the screen, but with a black background (no frownie faces). If things went well, you'd see the spinny thing at the bottom loading the OS (which I don't).

2) I am now writing this from said computer; I went to Uni, came back and tried to boot it again, and for some reason it worked normally. As far as I can tell, I haven't done anything differently.

Any takes on this?

Hopefully the system cleared whatever problem you were encountering. I suppose it could have been related to a video driver or some type of resolution, but the description of the picture you saw doesn't lead to a guess as to what might be happening.

If it happens again, see if you can boot into safe mode. You do have external bootable media...right?

This is what I saw, minus the spinny bit at the bottom. If it had been a driver problem, why did it happen repeatedly, and then stopped for no apparent reason.

As for external media, I have the install DVD on a bootable flashdrive. This computer doesn't have a ODD on it.

Thanks anyway.

I can't really give you a good answer, just a guess. But the system does repair operations during different times. It may have taken care of whatever was wrong....

OK. I appreciate your help & advice. Things have been running smoothly now, no hint of problems.
However, I'll leave this as «UNSOLVED» as I can't write down an actual solution to this. Maybe I'll find out something more in the future; if so I'll leave it here as-is for now.
