In the Pictures Library I can view some pictures, but for others I get only black boxes. All those pictures show perfectly in Photo Viewer and in Explorer. Any thoughts ??

I've got no idea, but are all the pictures the same file type, bmp, .jpg, .jpeg, size etc. Maybe it just doesn't like some file types.

They are different filetypes - most are .png. But that does not seem to matter. .png #3 will show and .png #4 will not show.

Doesnt sound like a file type problem then, although most of my pics are .jpg and dont seem to have any problems. Hopefully its just a bug that will be sorted out.

Just a bug that hopefully will be sorted out? What??

Why do people waste our time with these forums if they are not going to answer them. If you do not have the answer, kindly do not post instead of saying hopefully the bug will get worked out--I have this problem too and I want a solution nothing more, nothing less-how do I correct this problem? Now! Is the answer to remove Windows 8 and go back to 7?:think::think:

There are several aspects to the problem.

I tinkered around with it some and it seems that 2 or 3 possibilities are potentially present.

In your pictures library you have files and folders. Some are yours and some are public. In mine all public folders are empty.

I also have a webcam on my computer built into the monitor. I have one file called camera roll that is blank. I seem to recall that some time back I too was getting some blank photos but not now. You may try experimenting with the several settings in the file explorer and reset to default.

I saved your photo from your post to my pictures library. On your photo the file is IT-olwp1.jpg. After I saved it my file extension was peg. I got a quick flash notice that said - " you have new apps that can open this file ". But it blinked off and I haven't as yet found the referred apps. Sorry !

It seems, too, that this photo of the staircase with blank adjacent came from an Internet download from ITUNES! Is that correct? It doesn't seem to have come from a camera. In any event, unless that photo of the magnificent staircase is in your home  I'm guessing as speculated.

I should mention that there are other places to stash your pictures. For example in Sky Drive which is on the Microsoft servers and available in Win 8 to you. Also you can save photos in the free web photo hosting sites Snapfish and Photobucket free. Further the pictures can be saved to DVD, SD card, external hard drive, memory stick, flash drive and for pay sites that provide backup.

I noted that several other posters complained about blanks too so I'm assuming that all of them probably didn't download from a website. Are there blanks of pictures taken with a digital camera and uploaded to a computer ?

Bottom line. It looks like your problem is the type of file and apparent lack of the appropriate apps to open it.

I'll dig around a little bit and see if I can discover it.

-----------------------------------------------------

BTW you may try setting your screen resolution to the highest. It appears as though your present setting is adequate but it can't hurt to try.

OhhhhhhK!!! That sure seems to be the path of least resistance.

Where's the smiley face ? :p

I doubt that the other posters will follow that, so their problems and THE problem haven't been finalized.

Does anyone in the same boat want to pursue it or should I just drop the matter for them too?

Just as a matter of personal substance I intend to seek it out to it's finality for my own future reference.

The visible photo is actually a Windows 7 desktop wallpaper selection. It is the Palais Garnier, Paris, France, Paris Opera.

The blank on the right is an apparent corruption of the same photo.

This photo is FR-olwp4.JPG.

Viktor Kulik - FR-olwp4.jpg

It can be saved from the website as HTM, or PNG or JPG. by "saving as" or "sending" to or saving under another selection.

I saved the photo under all three file extensions in my pictures library" and it is readily visible there as well as in the photo viewer and other places.

In my case the picture was not corrupted because it could be displayed by other photo viewers plus the same happened with other pictures. And right, this is the Paris Opera.

I'm not sure this will work, but I was having issues with pictures not showing in the Metro app icon and I fixed it by using file explorer to go to the folders where the photos were stored and then first removing them from my library and then adding them back again.

Excellent goût. Mes compliments. Je suis un francophile.

Then let's work this out. Work with me. What else do we have to do except find the facts and remedy problems.

There are others watching and wanting.

Explanations welcome !

Can you post that picture so that we can further make efforts to remedy ?

There was no solution. I did not persue it. That picture viewer is as useless as the whole Windows 8.

Goodday friends. The continuing saga.

There are some contingencies and suppositions here:

* The originator of the thread dropped out. So this is for those remaining.

* The original photo of the Paris Opera was a Siamese to the adjacent blank.

* The visible photo was not a photo taken by the poster with a digital camera and then was imported. Instead it was, and is, a download from a website.

* There is a little bit of unexplained circumstance with the website vis-a-vis the photo. In one place I am seeing 36 photos for desk top wall paper. In another 14 photos, slide show. So I'm not certain that the Paris Opera photo that I found came from the posters website.

* The 14 photo slide show theme is of various structures/buildings that are unique, historic and from numerous countries.

* The quick flash pop up that I got saying; "You now have new apps to open this file" now comes regularly. It may have an either or meaning. a) It is saying that the photos are for a Windows 7 application and I have Windows 8. b) It may mean the I received updates since I bought my computer and now these new apps have been added.

During my experimentations with the Paris Opera photo and adjacent blank, I did save the photo from the website and sometimes it was actually two of the same side by side. Other times it was only the photo. My monitor is 20 inches and that permits side by side viewing.

Upon viewing the 14 photo slide show I noted that the various photos have different names and there are instances where two photos, that are different, have the same name. However, all photos on the website occupy the left half of the screen and the right half is a black background with text that gives data on the photo.

* One supposition is that in this case the blank portion may not be a photo at all but rather the adjacent text that accompanies each other photo. It simply may not have reproduced: a) because it was for Windows 7 and for unexplained reasons didn't copy to Windows 8: b) It could be some form of corruption. But the poster said it was actually a photo that he opened elsewhere using different methods. In any event I had no problem saving, opening and viewing any of the photos from the website using my Windows 8 Pro on my new HP computer.

I can't speak to the other inquirers problems because they didn't give any information.

Here's the photo I found that could possibly be the blank shown above.

Update:

Tried to import the Paris Opera photo with blank into Snapfish, the HP photo hosting website.

The file could not be opened because it is either corrupted or an invalid file format.

Uploaded this to Snapfish, from the same website and it works just fine, no problems.

Found the problem !

I Google'd the Paris Opera photo and opened other websites. The site that I initially used saved the photo in .peg And I couldn't find it in my pictures library to upload into Snapfish.

So I found the series in other websites and it saved in .JPG !

So the problem was actually in the websites and how the picture was being saved.

The two above photos did appear in my Library and did successfully upload to Snapfish where I copied and passed into the forum.
