I put in a little GT 610 graphics card about a week ago and everything has been fine since, I get up this morning and now there is the smell of burning dust coming from my computer.

I opened up the case, checked the fans, checked all the hardware, checked for burnt items on the motherboard and all seem to be in order, I checked what temps of things i could with the speccy program and all are in the normal range.

The computer is running fine, no slow downs or anything, can anyone suggest to me something else to look for, the smell of burning dust is quite strong though not overwhelming by any means.

Thanks
TC

Hello TC,

Have you already gave the inside of your case a good cleaning and blowing out any dust?

How does the PSU look? Don't open the PSU because it can electrocute you even when unplugged. Only look through the grill.

That sounds like it's time for a thorough case clean out. My bet says dust is on your heat sink either your GPU or CPU. Even the littlest bit of dust can cause something like that. And do get some good thermal paste, I personally have had great success with Artic Silver and right now liquid metal.

Found out the problem, checked my computer one last time before the Blackhawks game last night, the power supply fan had failed and there was smoke coming out of the power supply, immediately shutdown the computer, hit the power button on the power supply and unplugged the cord.

Went out today to my local computer shop, got a nice 700W power supply and all is well.
