Solved Trying to unzip a file

I am on my laptop at the moment and am trying to make a BIOS update stick for flashing my main desktop at home that has an Asus P8Z77-V board.

Now I have downloaded and saved both the BIOS utility - renamer and the BIOS version itself and both are zipped files.
I have tried using 7-zip to rename that BIOS file which the manual tells me I have to do but to get it to work when I use the 7-zip it goes to choose an app from the store. Now I have never fully understood zipping and unzipping files to be able to use the application and now this message has got me even more perplexed as to what to do!

Is there an app I should be using because I have not got the foggiest idea of what it is wanting me to do.

I did try this at home on the main machine but I did go round in circles on that (7) machine and until I get the BIOS ready on the stick I cannot flash the BIOS on that main machine.

So has anyone got any ideas of what I am not doing or need to do please?

Asus uses its own prog Winflash for BIOS upgrades, when you download the update it shoud have given you the option to download that to. and the instructions

Thanks Roy I will try that again and see what happens as to me it makes more sense rather than mucking around unzipping and all that stuff.

Have you tried right clicking the zip file and selecting Extract All?

Roy I have the rename from utilities an it says to combine both in the same folder but using rename just gives me a screen saying press any key to continue.

Winuser I right clicked the file and (I think) it unzipped using some program called Express Zip to that CAP file in the pic. Where the Express Zip came from is a mystery but it seems to have the right amount of data in that BIOS file now.

I have sent this to the stick now and am hoping this will be it?

Do you have the link to the files and instructions? A failed Bios update can ruin your computer.

Windows 7 & 8 have a built in compressed feature, this feature will be disabled if you install a third party program such as Winzip, Winrar or 7-Zip which you just double click the ZIP or CAB file then it will open up as a folder with all the files in it. All you need to do is to drag and drop them to the USB stick. However, copying the file to the USB stick will not work, you need to make the USB Stick bootable
So the procedure would be:

1. Download Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way
2. Copy all the files that you unzip to the USB
3. Set the BIOS to boot from the USB then reboot your PC.
4. Run the program to flash the BIOS

New version of BIOS usually created to fix something, read the description and determine whether the fix is related to your problem, otherwise you don't need to update it. As Winuser said, if you are not familiar with it, you can brick your PC.

Topgun mate this board has an easy flash feature all I need is that BIOS update on a stick I put it straight into the special port and just push a button on the board and it takes over.

I did it before just after I got the board and built the machine but it was very simple then now it has all this renaming stuff and rigmarole.

The machine has been getting steadily slower and I know I am about five updates behind at 1616 the one I want is 2104. These updates are to improve system stability and in particular one improves the power on which has been a problem that has been getting worse for some months.

Have done all the checks and malware runs etc etc ad nauseum and am willing to try the BIOS update even if only to see if things pick up as when I first built it the machine flew.

you might be better served if you do a backup personal data and reinstall windows.
that coming from a user who has very few programs to replace after the reinstall .

Yep Caper it might even come to that and as a matter of regularity I image every week with Macrium so I don't have much to worry about in that direction although the thought of reinstalling is..............

This procedure is a lot easier than it seems . Make note of any BIOS settings you previously changed from default .
On the file you renamed change the name to Z77VB.CAP , according this Renaming Rule pdf .

Copy this file on an EMPTY USB flash drive . Make sure the flash drive is formatted Fat32 .
On page 3-39 of your manual ( 3.10.2 ASUS EZ Flash 2 utility ) follow the steps listed for EZ Flash 2 to flash the BIOS .
When prompted to restart the pc do it .
When the the computer is restarting go back to the BIOS and load Optimized Defaults . Restart the computer .
Go back to the BIOS and make any changes from default you had noted from before .
Boot to windowz your done ☺

1. Unzip the BRenamer.zip file.
2. Unzip the P8Z77-V-ASUS-2104.zip file.
3. Copy or cut the file in the P8Z77-V-ASUS folder
4. Paste the file into the BRenamer folder.
5. Follow the instructions 2 and 3 in the readme file.

You can do either , right click the unzipped bios file and select rename or use the utility . Both accomplish the same thing .
I just flashed a couple of ASUS bios's and I did not use the utility .

As long as the update works, all is good! I don't like messing with the bios unless I have to.

I agree . Although I've flashed a lot of bios's ,I still am very cautious when doing it . On the z77 , z87 and x79 chipset boards there have been a lot of improvements in the code . So I think ( IMHO ) it is worth keeping them up to date .
Some of the ASUS boards do not have the Renaming Rules listed and you have to use the utility . Why ASUS can not just put the properly named bios file in their bios zip files I have no idea / clue . But they do not , oh well .

Ok I am back at home and am going to try again - to be honest I don't remember it being so hard to do this the first time

I have deleted all other downloads and re downloaded the BIOS and the REname files and "extracted"them now I just renamed the BIOS file to what was in that ref by jetroho and copied it to the stick and in the pic is what I get .

I still do not understand what the REname file does?? as opening it just gives me a black command window with "press any key to continue" - doing that makes the thing disappear hence me just right clicking and renaming the BIOS file.
What I thought was going to be so easy has turned into a bad dream as there seems to be so many different angles on how to do this.

Well all worked out in the end I redone the whole process and the same thing except that this time the rename automatically did the BIOS file to that one quoted before.
A few hiccoughs later and the machine is up and running so thanks to all for the time and patience

Yep I know mate why the thing just cannot come as it is - renamed and just as a download and preferably not a zip is beyond me.
But at least the machine is running better now mind you I ran the Samsung Magician on the drive and it certainly lifted it's game too.
