Windows 8.1 black screen

So I updated my windows was on win 8 then went to 8.1 and was fine for log time and now saw I had update yesterday so I updated it and when I turn on laptop it's loads to my users and it lets me log in but then goes to black screen !?? .... Need help . I've tryed system restore but I don't have a recovery cd ... But I made a USB flash drive while ago and now it's saying insert media or recovery DVD...

Incompatible Display driver is why you are getting the black screen. If you can get into Safe mode. You may be able to salvage it.

I got into safe mode last night and I was on my desktop ... But forgot how I got there ... I did shift + f8 but now nothing

If I had your system specs, I could probably help you, but since I don't know which video card you have, I'm hesitant to say much of anything.

One thing you can do is to go to Windows Update, click on View Update History and look for an update to your video card/driver and if you see such an update from yesterday, click on Installed Updates and then on the next page, click on Uninstall an update. Click on the appropriate update and hopefully, this will fix your problem.

Or, you can insert the flash drive when it tells you to insert media or recovery DVD.

Another thing you can do is to go to the website of your computer manufacturer and/or video card manufacturer and see if you can find an answer there.

Meanwhile, it would be good if you go to your profile and fill in every blank you can about your laptop. Especially brand name, video card, peripherals, how much RAM, hard drive, etc., as it will be helpful to those here to help you.

Ok I'm in safe mode now .. What can I do??
Uninstall the Display driver and let Windows load the default driver. Or roll it back to the previous driver. Never let Microsoft/Windows update update system drivers. There has been a problem with the 8.1 drivers causing these types of issues.
