Partitons are the Devil (Partiton help)

Hi,

I am a 15 year old techy who has a pretty big issue with partitions. It all started when I tried to install zorin alongside windows 8. I resized windows 8 partition and now I cannot open windows 8  I turned it on but got to a recovery screen and I was stuck there. I tried to refresh but it gave me an error saying that "the drive where windows is located is locked" don't know what the hell that means. I tried to reset it and it said that the partition that is required is not there. I thought about the fact that my sister has the exact same OS and manufacturer as me so I made a recovery drive off of hers and I can use it at the boot but it just gets me to the same screen. I have tried Gparted and it did nothing. I think im screwed. Oh and it gets worse. Today I turn it on and I am at a recovery screen with I get “Your PC needs to be repaired” and “Error code: 0xc0000225”. But I installed minitool so now I can recover lost partitions and there is a restore partition on it but I can not use it. Also I have windows 8 preinstalled on this laptop and I cannot find the key.

I just need to know how I can get windows 8 backup again. I am ok with reseting the entire laptop and losing my files. I just need a 3rd party software, partition help, need to know where my key is located, or how I can recover from someone elses recovery drive. thanks.

If you did that using GParted, or did that using the Zorin installer (which probably uses GParted), that was your big mistake. GParted has a history or corrupting Windows filesystems when used to shrink the OS partition. You should have used Disk Management inside Win8 to shrink the OS partition.

I tried to reset it and it said that the partition that is required is not there.
My guess is that is due to your messing around with the partitions. Any time you do this, you risk "breaking" the Reset operation as it looks like it expects the original partitioning scheme to be retained, intact.

Also I have windows 8 preinstalled on this laptop and I cannot find the key.
The key is encoded into the BIOS of the machine -- this is the default situation with Win8 preinstalled PCs. Thus, there is no sticker that will tell you the key.

Sorry ... you're not going to like this ... but all of your problems could have been prevented with a little research on your part. I post daily on Linux forums and are constantly warning people about NOT just charging ahead with multi-OS installations without checking certain things first.

As to getting your PC back, I'm presuming your did NOT make an image backup of your PC before you charged ahead into the Zorin installation, right? IF you had, you could have used that now to restore the PC.

Since the Win8 built-in reset does not work, and you most likely do NOT have install media, my suggestion is for you to contact the PC supplier to see if they will SELL you full-restore disk media (probably a DVD). That will cost you something, but most likely, a LOT less than going out and buying a retail copy of Win 8.1.
