Solved Cant find windows defender

I cannot finf Defender to enable me to turn on.

Done a search, looked at System & Security in control panel, to no avail

It's in the Control panel. (Settings ==>control panel)

I'm running W8.1 now -- can't remember if W8 changed - but I'm sure it was the same. If you add other 3rd party AV software then Windows defender might automatically be disabled -- not sure about that either but I'm sure I've seen a few posts on that.

If you have installed another antivirus control, chances are it turned off Defender. Otherwise, if it isn't, as Jimbo suggests, in the Control Panel, then see if it is disabled in the services (Type services.msc in run, or in the Metro screen)

Alternatively, you can open the Action centre, also in the CP, and try and restart Defender from there.

my control panel is different to yours? I am w8.1

Ok, done that, which is better to view, but you will see the outcome takes me no further?

What other AV stuff do / did you have ? I mean something resident.

Problem solved, I was unaware that Defender would not run when McFee was running, I have now removed McFee.
