Hello everyone,

I hope you can help me.

I have recently done a fresh install of Windows 8.1 on a family member's laptop due to the amount of bloat ware etc.

Everything has gone swimmingly and all the correct drivers etc are installed/up to date.

There's one big problem though. Whenever I change the power plan it just remains the same. I.e if I have the power setting to 'High Performance' and I change it to 'Power Saving' nothing happens.
The brightness doesn't even decrease.

The laptop is a Lenovo Ideapad Z580.

Many thanks and any help is appreciated in advance.

Liam

Hi,
I had a similar problem like yours on a Samsung laptop. I eventually found out that the Samsung Settings control panel had a fan setting called 'Silent Mode' which was overriding the Windows power plan settings, and guess what, they never told you, how good is that, what a dynamite piece of programming - hats off to Samsung!:what:

It caused all sorts of problems with other applications as well, such as audio drop-outs when using my USB audio interface, once I turned it off everything was hunky-dory.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for your help,

I will try this when I get home and will let you know how I get on. :)

Hope it works, it took me days to find the problem on my machine, I just didn't expect the Samsung Setting to alter the Windows power settings and had forgotten about them.

Cheers.

I'm hoping this is the problem but I don't understand why this didn't occur when I initially set up the laptop.

Fingers crossed this is the root of the cause; I don't want to have to contact Lenovo who frankly don't seem that great with the support they offer.

Thanks again mate. :thumb:

Unfortunately nothing has changed. :(

Hi lmcgold,

Have you checked that you have system administrator permissions?

You need to be logged-in as a system administrator to change a power plan, if you're logged in as a guest then you do not have the right permissions.

It's only one user account which has Admin privileges.

I believe I may have fixed it by changing the driver to the Microsoft basic driver from the Intel graphics (latest) driver.

I did this as I noticed the brightness controls (Fn keys) weren't working for the brightness.

Odd.

A bit of a strange one that, I hope you've fixed it.

I wonder if the Intel driver has corrupted a system file some how?

Just a thought, have you tried to create a plan yourself, then tried to alter it or delete it? Maybe try it with the Microsoft driver and then with the Intel driver installed and see what happens.

Also, if I remember correctly, Windows will not allow you to delete the 'Power saver', 'Balanced' and 'High performance' plans, they are there by default.

Might be a good idea to uninstalled the Intel driver and then reinstall it, just to see if that helps as well.

Cheers.

Thanks mate, really appreciating your input. :)

I have tried all as suggested already and it didn't make a difference. I have also noticed the status notification lights on the front edge of the laptop for power etc. are not as bright as they once were. I spoke to Lenovo about this and the support rep wasn't very helpful.

Don't you just love computers!

I do hope it's not a hardware problem?

I was looking at buying a Lenovo tablet, glad I didn't get one now, got the Google Nexus instead.

If I come up with any other ideas I'll get back to you.

Regards.

When you changed the power settings, did you see a "save changes" button? Sometimes these aren't all that noticeable and are easily missed.

Sorry for the confusion but I didn't alter the power plans.

I meant that when you selected one of the default power plans, power saver for example, it wouldn't lower the brightness of the screen.

I had to downgrade the video driver to the Microsoft basic one for them to work. I'm pretty sure though before I reinstalled the OS it had the Intel driver installed. Pretty weird imo.

Anyway thanks for your help guys.
