Hi,

I am trying to arrange the tiles in the Start Menu in the order I want but it is impossible. If I move one to, let's say, the left, the other tiles around will also move in any direction.

It is a headache, more like a brain game, to arrange them in the order you want.

I just want to have my programs in the order I want in the Start Menu.

Does anyone know if this is possible at all?

Thanks

It's like a puzzle. You just have to keep shifting them. Annoying isn't it.

It's called bad design. Solving a Rubic's Cube is easier than getting the tiles arranged in the order you want. Trying to place tiles you want next to each other must surely be easier than this nonsensical game.

How do you add the titles above the specific areas?
I think you can do that with a utility like this but I haven't tried it:
Windows 8 Consumer Preview Start Screen Customizer
HTH.

Nope. Unless I missed something, that program (I resist to call apps to the programs in Windows PC :D) doesn't arrange the tiles. It is for other things.

How did you guys manage in your screenshots? So far I managed to have all my programs together in the firts pack and the colorful apps in the second useless pack, but still I can't arrange the order in my first pack.

Lol. Microsoft has definetely gone bananas.

Top tip aramil, did not know that. I don't think you have to hold ctrl at all? That tool looks like the start of something useful brummyfan.

I just noticed you can right click a blank area and an option to see a list of all Apps pops up o_o

OP, the tiles aren't actually moving in a random direction. They cascade to the right, then down a row.

:D:D:D Lol. Exactly. I also thought of the Rubik's cube.

Modernity and cool design pays a price. I can imagine the cool modern minimalist designers mixed with the classic nerds with glasses and pens in the shirt pocket working together in Microsoft and coming out with this Homer's car.

Theoretically, minimalism, such as Metro tiles design, is suppoused to SIMPLIFY to the point of making it easy for childern, elderly and retards, not to make it absurdly difficult or simply impossible for basic tasks and needs.

Amazing...

yeah the ctrl button allows zooming out using a scroll wheel on a mouse

Honestly kmint, it's not absurdly difficult, at all. I guess it wouldn't be bad if by the final version they did away with the cascade, but if they didn't it would be fine too.

Aahhh sssoooo. I was just using that microscopic button to the bottom right.

Yeah I find the Ctrl Button speeds up Zooming in and out, less traveling time (mouse wise)

HOW THE TILES MOVE:

ADDING:
tile flow.png
So If I add a tile at the start then every tile after this move one square in the direction shown and the last one moves to the next free space following the pattern.
If I was to add it part way through then only items after it would move. (if you fill a 4*2 group and then add another tile then it makes a new 4*2 group)

Wide tiles will only move Down/UP in a 4*2 group (so if you have five single tiles then a wide tile there will be a gap above and to the right of the wide tile)

REMOVAL is the same patten but reversed

hope this helps

Idea for Microsoft/Survivor tie-in: Make an immunity challenge end in a Windows 8 "Metro"-thing Start Page slide puzzle. Why should phone companies get all the glory?

The more logical way of doing it would be down a column and then create a new one, but Microsoft's choice of having wide tiles would make the layout ugly and difficult to implement so this is the more logical choice for this situation.
