Hi there

NO WAY will tablets etc take over PC's -- I've just been messing around with some Video files -- not too large -- and even on a 16GB QUAD 3.2 GHZ processor video conversions and DVD burning take a LONG LONG TIME - even paralleling up for using all 4 cores -- no way on this or any other planet in the universe would a tablet be capable of performing these sorts of tasks in any sensible timeframe whatsoever.

(It might complete ONE project in time for YEAR 3000 left running 24 hrs a day (Y3K - where I suppose people will be wondering why their leap year stuff is broken !!!!!).

Tablets may have their uses but not for these sorts of tasks in any shape or form - I could really do with an 8 Core I7 (if there is such an animal).

Cheers

Yeah, PC's will always be around for these type of tasks. But the average computer user is doing far less or stuff like that these days....hence the reason that tablets are becoming the norm.

IF people were converting video files, which most don't for sure hence why laptops are the norm of computing to be supplemented or superseded by tablets, most likely of which will be Intel/AMD based.

They do make i7 powered tablets as well as ones with mobile GPUs. This is quite common for laptops. Most people with what's considered high end for laptops don't ever come to understand how a proper ATX system can outperform their laptop. They don't because they'd rather have something powerful yet mobile.

agree ,they will not die ,but as already said above , people are just not doing much with video like you are ,for movies and music they just download to the device and watch it through the device to a big screen tv .A iPhone with a apple tv box is all you need to do this .or any smart phone with mini hdmi ,via a cable .a lot of people are just doing it all with there smart phones

I think we have to distinguish between 2 types of users.

1. Those that consume - for these people a tablet is adequate. Watching stuff on Youtube or downloading a few music files as well as posting on the social networks and even mail is doable on a tablet - especially if it comes with a keyboard (although the size of that is a challenge for a power typist). I suspect most private users fall into that category

2. Those that produce - be it as individuals or in a company. I don't see my tax consultant to do my tax declaration on a tablet nor can I make a difficult Power Point show on a tablet. Also do I not see the personel department or the design department of Mercedes sitting in their offices with tablets.

So the future will have options for everybody. And not only tablets are an option for the 'consumers', e.g. Chromebooks are a good alternatives too. And as more and more facilities move to the cloud, I am sure they will come up with simple, cheap devices with which you can do both - consume and produce. That would be the real challenge for the traditional PC.

Actually PC's are being removed in a lot of uses, and being replaced with Tablets, or Transformers (Tablet/Laptop). The newer generation of Laptops. Are just as powerful as a decent laptop these days. The chipsets in the tablets are becoming just as powerful as what is in laptops/transformers.

As a longtime user of desktop PCs as well as laptops, there is no way this laptop will replace my desktop. Although this is a 17" with keypad, it's still like typing on a box of chicklets!

With that said, since I'm visiting a friend this week, the laptop is ideal for traveling and I can function fairly well with it. Still, if I have my 'druthers, I'm much happier on my desktop when I'm at home.

I've owned a Kindle Fire for several years and recently upgraded to an 8.9" Kindle Fire HD; however, other than reading and a few other things, the Kindle's not all that great. So, I got an HP Slate 10.1" tablet. Much better than the Kindle as far as typing goes, since I can turn it sideways and type fairly comfortably, using it as if it's a real keyboard. It's still a tablet, though, and as far as production goes, not so much. Also, those nasty fingerprints on my screen are just not my cuppa. I use a stylus most of the time to keep my screen clean.

As far as power goes, sure laptops are getting as powerful as desktops; however, one has to get past the (mostly) maximum 17" screen and the chicklet keyboard. Thanks, but no thanks! When it comes to production, I want my desktop and the comfort of my office chair, not the portable lappy that requires me to sit in a straight back chair because there's not an office chair available to me when I travel.

Yep, I can mostly type as fast and as accurately on this chicklet keyboard as I can on my Logitech Wave keyboard simply because I go back and forth between the two quite regularly. I still prefer my desktop and office chair for production work, though. And the tablets are a distant third in popularity with me.

Wyonna, it is going that way. Desktops are rarely being used by those of us that need a mobile platform for school and work. So what you are telling us, is that you are going to haul a desktop, keyboard, mouse and large sized monitor, when you have to go somewhere. I think not.

I can get a decent laptop that could run circles around your desktop. If I wanted to spend that kind of cash. And the best thing is, that it would blow your desktop out of the water in how much faster it would run processes.

Got to start a bit earlier to understand whole computer trend. First there were mainframes, when PC showed on the scene everybody thought they would replace mainframe but they are still alive and getting more powerful all the time. Than PCs got smaller and mobile, again but this time desktop PCs seemed to be in peril but they too are alive and well, getting more powerful all the time. Just their modularity and being able to customize them can guarantee them long life. I believe there's at least few screws on my desktop that hail from my old x386 computer, just kept changing parts one by one until today's desktop is what it is. Love this old extra large Chieftec Dragon case, so many things can fit in there, any ad-ons to the computer are just few minutes away. Just to clean dust out of a laptop can mean at least a half day project.
Than usable tablets stepped on the scene but by their nature they are what they are, not much you can do with them, much less than with laptops. For heaven's sake, most of them are just glued together, cant even change battery. Than laws of physics mixed their nasty fingers in it, just can't make them smaller and more powerful at the same time, it takes energy for anything to be done and until somebody figures out to keep enough of it in much, much smaller package there will not be any tablets with close enough power to do the work of a desktop with practically limitless power potential.
Smart phones are even in greater problem than tablets because of their size. Smart watches I will not comment at all, they are not even close to contention for now.
For now, let's just stick to what of each device is made for and capable of, replacing each of the computer types is limited just to their own use, there should be no other comparison. Apples to apples, oranges to oranges, slight overlapping not withstanding.

Hi there
I don't disagree with what you say about laptops -- BUT :

If you need say 12 HDD's and 64GB RAM then your laptop is not going to be "very portable". -

The Brits have a decent saying here -- "Horses for Courses" - although for anything even remotely to do with Horses I'd try IRELAND !!!! - especially for racing.

Sadly, I hardly ever touch my desktop anymore. Almost everything is done from my laptop, and then my smartphone.

Gaming in one place where I would still need to be on a desktop, but I haven't turned on my gaming PC in over a year. Very little time for gaming, and when I have time I use my xbox360.

I've long since passed the stage of "my daddy can beat up your daddy" and as I said in my post, I'm well aware that laptops are as efficient as desktops. Since I own several desktops (for beta testing), two laptops and two tablets, I guess you could say I'm well qualified to figure out which computer is best, whether I'm at home or traveling.

BTW, when I bought this laptop, it ran rings around the primary desktop I was using; however, my HP now runs rings around it!

At work, I have an office chair,a desk, and a laptop. 14" screen on laptop running 1600x900 and a secondary 27" display running 2560x1440. I type on the laptop keyboard and use a wired Microsoft trackball explorer mouse. . I don't need a zillion hard drives as I have servers to store my files. Makes it easy to move my computer to a conference room and take it home as I'm on call 24x7.

But I also have two desktops that I use for running vm labs. They are on a kvm, and share a wired keyboard and wired mouse. These work better as I can run multiple hard drive spindles for better I/O.

Laptop vs Desktop Price Performance for $300-$500

Why you may want a desktop instead of a laptop | PCWorld from September 2013 states whether you are spending $300 or $3000 one gets more with the desktop. For the $300-$500 end of the scale, this may not be correct.

A laptop with AMD A6, 4GB (upgradeable to 16GB), 15 inch touch screen, 2 USB 2.0, 1 USB 3.0, HDMI, VGA, Ethernet port, SD reader, internal speakers, microphone jack, headphone jack, keyboard, camera, microphone, integral 4 hour battery backup was bought for $380, after waiting for a great discount.

A similarly equipped (19.5 inch monitor) desktop rounds out at $493 without a 4 hour battery backup. The plus side on the desktop is upgradeability and replaceable parts.

For the $300-$500 range, the laptop is better for price and features. These laptops do not run circles around the desktop, but the laptop stays ahead. A laptop uses its case as a frame for the keyboard, places the peripherals on the motherboard, which eliminates expensive connectors and cables. Laptops sales are greater than desktops, so manufacturing improvements from large scale favors the laptop. Laptops are cheaper to ship than separate monitors, keyboards, and system units. BYOT (Bring your own technology) to middle school, high school, college and work continues to play in the laptops favor.

For systems priced above $500, I suspect the desktop performs better. But, I would need to collect some real data to prove this. So, the desktop is staying around for power users.

Oops, the original thread is about tablets replacing PC's. Then, the tablet needs to be big enough to type on and see information on the screen.

Tablets my not replace desktops for all of us but desktops are quickly becoming a niche market while tablets are becoming mainstream.

My employer provides me with a laptop which is great for portability. I also have 2 docking stations, 1 at home and another in my office. At both locations I have external monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers so there is little difference to me whether I am on a laptop or desktop. On top of that, the bulk of my work is done by remotely logging in to distant servers.

I could see that it would be within the realm of possibility that my work laptop could be replaced by a tablet or even a smartphone with external peripherals such as external monitor, keyboard, etc... and I could still perform the work I do today.

JHough, you do realize that PC World is Microsoft Propaganda. Ballmer started that one. I do not even bother reading PC World anymore. It is Microsoft this, Microsoft that.

The manufacturers know what is keeping their bottom line afloat at this point. It is mobile devices (Tablets, Transformers, Laptops). Government for the mass majority are still using desktops. But that is because they do not want Laptops in places like Call Centers. You will find a few sitting in various departments that use them, due to they are always on the go, and need the device with them.

I don't know about rest of the world right now but around here, give me any amount of money and I will put together a desktop more powerful than a laptop for same amount, any time. Just the fact of greater possibility of upgrading a desktop is an asset a laptop can not have. Relatively poor BIOS in laptops (to be fair, in some ready made desktops too) that gives little or no chance to overclock makes a desktop a winner in this contest. Laptops are also by their nature made to consume less power and that has to lower their performance. It's almost impossible to start with a cheap laptop and than slowly upgrade later part by part as you can with a desktop.
Lets take an AMD am3+ MB, there's a tens of processors you cam put in there, from a lowly 2 core to a powerhouse with 8 cores. Just can't see a laptop with a processor of 220Wats, battery would blow up unless a size of battery for an 18 wheeler. For a processor like that you need water cooling which would be rather difficult to implement in a laptop.
A 17" laptop is not that much lighter than a carefully crafted desktop either.
So, lets put all that in a right perspective, laptop is a portable device and everything has to be made with that in mind, the moment when that is lost by overpowering it, so it's heavy and battery does not last any appreciable time makes it just a small desktop and than it looses it's main asset.

CountMike, all valid points. But most will trade loss of overclocking capability if they can travel easily with their laptop. I like being able to move the laptop around the house, and take outside and sit on the porch.

I'm not much of an upgrader, I just end up replacing the whole thing. Then I give the old one to my kids or somebody in need.
