Just want to see if anyone has any ideas, my 320 GB HDD which was my Windows 8 partition in this machine needs to be copied, I really need the Data from it. I have a replacement Hard Drive, but the 320 gigger won't stay spinning, it stops after about half an hour if that long. SMART says the drive is OK, but it just falls off the SATA Bus after a short time.

I have several other WD Drives that use the exact same Control Board, I've tried swapping them out but so far none of them have been able to read the drive. I still have a few more to try from my huge box of old drives.

I have a 1 TB Black faced WD to move it into, so I'm just trying to figure out how to get this moved, or to get the drive running for a day so I can use the Partition Manager. I'm sure there is nothing wrong with the platter, how if I took apart on old 160 Gig and stuck the 320 platter in? I also have about 3 other 320 giggers I could use.

I stuck this in General, probably should be Hardware but this isn't strictly a Windows 8 Problem, just want to see if there are any solutions that don't require me to pay 1000 bucks to a data recovery place.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
How about setting power saving feature for disks to never and see if it's maybe shutting off.

No Dice, it's doing this outside of the OS. On two different boards. I'll check to see if there are any power settings, but I'm sure it's the drive. There is nothing wrong with it, just that it keeps shutting off. Like completely off, not just Low Power mode.

I don't think there's a "Low Power mode" for internal HDDs, they either shut off or not. You can find that setting in Advanced Power settings.

Then how does the OS tell the hard drives to power down? There is a mode where the Drives are still powered, but the Winchester Arm is parked. But the drive is still powered up. In my case, the drive just shuts off completely, and is inaccessible to the MB and/or any duping process I started.

It started abut a month ago, I would be doing something, and there would be horrible stalling, but then I was able to continue like there was nothing wrong. This kept getting worse so I pulled the drive - But now it won't stay on for longer than 10 minutes. If I don't use the drive for a week, I can get maybe an hour of use out of it - But I need about 4 hours for the copy process.

That setting is for all drives connected, they stop spinning, heads park but controller stays on so BIOS and OS knows it's still there. In theory, they should start spinning as soon as accessed and not stop if in use but I found few times that it doesn't work all the time like it should, specially if aggressive power saving is set.

Hi here

First thing to do is if you can while the disk is working is to COPY / CUT as much of your DATA to other partions / areas on a different disc -- simply use Windows / File explorer to move directories. Do it in decent chunks so your HDD won't stop in the middle.

These should be PURE DATA files such as Music, video, office type docs, photos etc. If you have OUTLOOK you can also copy your Outlook data file -- it's in c:\name\documents\outlook files where name is your username on your system.

Don't move Programs --just pure DATA --it's always a good idea to seprate DATA from OS as you don't get problems when restoring / backing up / re-installing the OS - you won't lose / overwrite data.

Once you've done that you can then probably reduce your Windows partition to say 60 GB -- should be enough.

Now with an imager type of product (Free Macrium, Acronis etc) take an image and save to another disk

Now restore to new disk. GPARTED is a nice free tool for manipulating partitions.

(To get the disk working - you could remove it and "convert it to an external HDD" --plenty of kits around to do that - you'll need a powered one though. Then connect the disk from enclosure via USB to computer). Conversion kit is only around 20 USD if that -- well worth the investment risk -- even if it doesn't work - you've only lost 20 USD -- but if it DOES work even if only for a while then you've won handsomely).

http://www.amazon.co.uk/L803B-Drive-Enclosure-External-compatible/dp/B000JK769E (IDE) SATA ones also available for around 8 USD (5 GBP) more

Cheers
jimbo

I'm wondering if the drive is overheating and shutting itself down. Could airflow in the case be blocked or the fan is failing?

Or if the drive itself has an issue and is running too hot, maybe remove it from the case, leaving it connected, and put a cold pack (like you put on knee or ankle injuries, or ice cubes in a Ziploc bag) on it and see if it lasts longer.

So far I like Jimbo's Idea - I'll give it a shot - I am going to put the drive in the freezer for a day.

It's true though, that these drives run VERY Hot in my machine. Usually around 110-120 F. My GPU runs at almost 200 f! all of the GPUs in all of my machines run around 150 or so.

So my next project is to buy new cases and install some extra fans. Summer is acumin, and I don't know if my systems will survive another hot one. I'll check back and let you know what's happening - I tried sticking the 1 TB WD drive I just bought into a G5 Tower, and I realised it is a Sata 3! So the Tower won't read it heh. It works fine in my external case so I think I'll move my main Movies DB to it.

Yah as Jimbo says, the main thing I need to get is my iTunes Data, I need to find all of my iPhone, iPad backups and Apps, Movies and Library files, I can restore my Library to this machine once I get the files out.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
It may be power starved or heat up. I would try an open external powered caddy. There it is cooler and gets enough power.
