I think it's time to move away from the Details view.

Ever since the Graphical User Interface was introduced, EVERY single folder by default, from mac to Windows, is in some kind of little details view with a little folder icon next to the folder name. Well, for the sake of Start Screen's visual approach, I think it would be best to go from Details view, to Large Icon view in Windows Explorer. For the naysayers, the amount of viewable folders and files actually remains the same in most cases and usually increases the amount, even with the Details pane in Windows 8 enabled. Without the Details pane, the amount viewable increases.

Proof of such...

If you use large icons you loose the ability to see the detail provided by additional columns. It's fine for basic folders where there are few details, but for folders that contain photographs, music or many other categories, it just doesn't work. Personally, I'll stay with details view, which also consumes less space when used in conjunction with filters appropriate for the content.

Like Calico, I use details view all the time, it provides me with vital info. I use it a lot for my music. To me, the details view needs to stay, and besides the scroll wheel is not hard to use at all!

Deliver us from evil ? Amen

@1440 x 900 I was able to view only 8.
But I'll try it anyway, because the devil is in the details.

I see your point (kind of) but details view (for me at least) is much more useful.

I will be the first to admit... my user structure is not the most organised in the world, as this machine has 3 machines worth of data amalganated onto it, and "My Documents" becomes a sort of dump for everything that I haven't organised yet.

The only time Large Icons is really necessary (imo) is for Pictures and Videos... and if it's a pics or vids folder, Windows will generally automatically do that for you anyway.

I have been using tile view. I used to use details, but now you can pin the "details pane" icon up to the top, so that you can one-click toggle the details pane and see more info about a file if you have to. It gives you the best of both worlds.

Yeah, I think when vista came out and the Details pane, I bet Microsoft might had indirectly tried to shift folder view to that, because you can see more in some instances, and it looks nicer; along with the concepts of the Start Screen, you have a tendency to easily find and locate items better than Details view. If you need details on a file or folder, the Details pane shows you them.

Not "My" Details

It shows the "Details" that MS chose.

For example, I don't need camera info.
That pane can only replace "Details" view, when you can tell it what "Details" to show.

Unlike W7, you can't have the "Preview pane" and "Details pane" on at the same time.
