Hi There

First post, and very new to W8, but hopefully describe myself as a competent pc user.

Amongst the saved things I have in Drive (or Cloud) is my Downloads folder where I keep favourite progs, but I cannot get them to open/work?

Sometimes, Smartscreen Blocks them Solid, and you can't unblock them. Usually in the case of malicious code. If you have a lot of Programs saved in GDrive, depends where you got em, cos even things like Java have the Ask Toolbar bundled, and toolbars are officially considered Viruses now, ccleaner comes bundled with Google Toolbar, and it's Blocked cos of the toolbar. Many usually decent programs are being bundled with software that is now officially labelled Virus.

When I r/c, I don't get the properties option?

Maybe I misunderstood your post.

Are the programs on OneDrive or on your computer ?

A screenshot of the situation would help.

David

Will try to clarify>>>

I have recently finished using XP on previous laptop as I liked it, so never advanced to later O/S's, so W8 is a new world.

Before w8, I stored music/pics/backups on individual memory sticks, and during that time, as an additional backup, and learning curve, I added same to what I knew at the time as Google Docs.

So when I finished configuring my new laptop and w8, I came across Google Drive, and am not sure if that is the same as Google Docs.

So I have done P/S to see if it helps you help me.

I might add, that folders shown in P/S, are no longer on a memory stick, so they are only available on this google docs/drive, and I would like more control over them.

Appreciate your time.

You can't (generally speaking) run a program from a cloud drive. There may be apps that can run (google docs or Miscrosoft Office apps for example) but these are web front ends. If you have a .exe then you need to install it on your PC. Google Drive or Dropbox or Skydrive or whatever are for backing up data (pictures, music etc). None of them will let you run programs unless you have a local copy.

I suggest you copy one program to your desktop and then try running it and see if it will work.

Hear what you say, but I cannot copy or drag any of those progs to my desktop or stick, so I assume I need to download all again from net, and save to my hard drive then stick for backup.

Not very impressed with Drive/cloud/google docs, more trouble than they are worth, but only my opinion of course.

I kind of agree with you really. I did use Google drive in the past but it always used too much CPU so I abandoned it. My son uses it though as his school insists...

If you only have something on Google Drive then for sure you'll have to download it - either from there or wherever you got it from in the first place which will probably be quicker.

Sorry I can't give you a better answer but you do need the .exe on your computer - that is for sure.

FYI:
  1. Google Docs is a free, web-based office suite offered by Google within its Google Drive service
  2. Google Drive is a storage service offered by Google. It is the same as SkyDrive ( now it's called OneDrive) offered by Microsoft.

To download your files from Google Drive. You'll need to put a check mark on each item then click on More->Download. See screen shot

Another option is to install the Google Drive in your PC then you'll have a Google Drive Icon in the task bar which you can synchronize files between your PC & Google Drive using Drag & Drop. See Screen Shot

Hope this Helps !!!
