After a windows update crashed during startup, my laptop is taking 20+ minutes on the "welcome" loading bar after you login. The login screen itself it very laggy and takes 5 minutes to navigate. The "Lenovo" loading screens upon startup takes 3 or 4 minutes.

Occasionally a black screen will appear and I cant get past it in the loading process.

First thing to try is to run from elevated command prompt:

sfc /scannow
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

These should help fix any corruption in Windows. Could you try running them and see if they help or report any problems. They will take a while and you may have to restart your PC in between.

Safe mode

Try booting in Safe Mode. If you don't know, Safe Mode is the 'no frills' version of Windows boot. You don't have to reconfigure anything. Windows when booting in this mode knows what it needs to start with and only boots those programs/services/features/components.

So if booting in Safe mode is very quick, then you know two things: 1. Your Windows system is OK. 2. Some feature- probably a program added by the user - is the cause of the long boot problem.

// 2-7-2015 - Purchased cheap Win 8.1 tablet. So far, it's amazing. Update: 5-24 - Switched to MS Surface 3. it's just a better way to go.
FWIW I have one pc which takes a long time to boot up if App Readiness is checked under msconfig > Services. If I uncheck App Readiness, it's fast boot up - don't know why. It happened after a Windows update but I don't recall which one. My other desktop and my laptop don't have this problem and they are the same specs - go figure.
