hi everyone,

ive had this happen twice already on my custom built pc, first time around i was able to access the bios and select the correct sequence for the hdds to read properly. now im running into this issue again after i had previously just did a shutdown of my system with no issues before hand. my problem now is i cannot access my keyboard to get back into the bios screen to correct the same issue i once had before. its almost like the usb ports cannot read my keyboard at all, ive tried both rear and front ports to no avail. i dont believe its a bad motherboard b/c the bios screen does initiate on startup before going to the treacherous reboot and select proper boot device screen. could this be related to a CMOS issue? Ive tried the whole shutting system down draining residual power unplugged unnecessary usb connectors and all that before trying with no luck. any help here would be greatly appreciated.

system:

If the BIOS is losing your settings I would replace the CMOS battery. Some motherboards have to have the "Legacy USB Support" option enabled, for a USB keyboard to get BIOS access. Does that motherboard have one of the older PS2 keyboard/mouse ports on it? Resetting the BIOS to defaults should enable the USB Legacy Support option, if your BIOS has it. There should be a jumper on the motherboard for resetting the BIOS to defaults. You move it, and move it back with the power off and the power supply unplugged.

Alpha,

CMOS battery is about 3 months old which is another reason why i find this puzzling, i do have a port for a ps2 keyboard which i'll try 1st and foremost, if that doesnt work i'll look for the jumper on the MB and try that then I'll replace the CMOS battery if all else fails.

thanks for the advice alphanumeric

They fail prematurely some times. The motherboard may have sat on the shelf for a while too. The batteries are cheap so I'd replace it anyway. If you don't you'll always wonder if its the motherboard of the battery.

Alpha, got it working again I basically popped the battery out and popped it back in again to access the BIOS and sequence my hdd correctly. More than likely the battery is slowly dieing. Thanks again!

If it's weak and on the edge it may be fine depending on how long the PC is off. It's when the PC is off that it gets used. The longer the PC is off the higher the odds are of messed up settings.
