I have a folder in Windows 8 (C) now which I believe pertains to Windows 8.1 Update 1. Can someone explain to me what it is - and if it is a necessary file which I should leave as is. Screenshot of the contents is attached. Appreciate any help on this. Thanks.

Those folders get left behind on occasion,, not always.
Basically something interrupted the cleanup process before or after the reboot and caused them to get left behind.
Not everyone experiences that, or not all the time. XP was worse about it for some people, while others never had/have the issue.

Once everything is running fine,, you can delete the and I would run Windows updates Check again just to be sure.
But shouldn't be an issue.

I'm pretty sure Disk Cleanup (System Files) will take care of that.

Disk Cleanup will not clear folders that the System Restore marks as a recently loaded/updated piece of software. There is a lot of behind the scenes management, that will sometimes control what is able to be deleted and what cannot.

Correct, but eventually it will; 'Windows update backup files' or something like that.

Use Disk Cleanup in C: Properties for Windows Updates Cleanup.
These files are useless & can be safely removed.
